How to properly seal a Y pipe.

People lately have had a lot of issues sealing up aftermarket Y pipes including myself. I went to speak to a friend of mine who owns an exhaust shop and told me how to do it.

What your gonna need

14mm socket
12mm socket
22 mm wrench (or O2 socket)
about a foot-ish of extensions
3/8 ratchet
pry bar or flat head screwdriver
a dremel with a wire brush head or 100 grit sand paper
Red High temp RTV
Walker y pipe o ring gaskets

To remove the y pipe (there is a separate write up)

-Undo the rear y pipe flange to cat (2 14mm bolts)

-Remove the hangers for the y pipe (2 12mm or 10mm bolts)

-Undo the O2 sensors with the 22mm wrench or O2 socket (2-3 pendind fed or cali spec

- 6 total of 14 mm (im pretty sure its 14mm) nuts holding the y pipe flanges to the exhaust manifolds

-Drop the Y pipe then slide it out from under the car and we are ready to get to work.

Changing the gaskets!!

Using a Pry bar or flat head screwdriver, pry up the old y pipe gasket from both upper flanges. and you should have something like this

using a dremel tool or sand paper grind out all the dirt and carbon deposits in the groove which should be nice and shiny afterward

Next we are going to take the Red RTV high temp and put that in the groove of the y pipe once it has been cleaned

then we are going to place in the gasket...the gasket has a groove on the bottom. (view in pic)

that groove on the bottom of the gasket need to be placed down in the groove of the y pipe.

The easiest way to fit the gasket in there is to use a rubber mallet and gently (without denting the gasket) tap it in and it should look like this when your done

once you get to that point simply go to bolt everything back up under the car and reinstall the y pipe

////when bolting down the upper y pipe flanges to the exhaust manifolds/headers tighten each side a little at a time until it is snug FAILURE TO DO SO WILL CREATE A LEAK that is because the gasket will not seat properly///

I chose to use walkers because they were quite a bit thicker than oems and were much cheaper.

side by side comparison to aftermarket cheap copper gaskets that come with most y pipes next to the walkers

btw the RTV is not to actually seal the y pipe its supposed to be used to help keep the gasket seated and in place while changing that O ring.

SENSOR SAFE RTV

Regular RTV will foul O2 sensors.
