another exhaust question

alright so i tried searching and couldnt find what im looking for, im sure someone will spend 5 min and find my answer, attach it as a reply so sorry in advance:/....ok so....right now my exhaust is...simply put...shi*...so im looking to get a new exhaust and y pipe in the near future when i get the money.
the Y pipe is a definate...my question is for us 4th gens, do we NEED cats...as far as back pressure, power etc. im looking at going 2.5 for now because in n/a..for now. when i go boost ill get 3 but for now ill stay small ish. i want to take it to a guy i know and he bents pipe does custom work. will i loost power if i just go catless y pipe, and then straight pipe all the way back to muffler?
would i do better to get a high flow cat? sorry its soo long, thanks in advance!

All aftermarket y-pipes are catless (except for the Magnaflow OEM style one) and most are 2.5" (I've seen some with 2.25" piping). Aftermarket catbacks are also 2.5" if you wanna go that route.

The gains are from the catless y-pipe so don't worry about losing power. After you get a y-pipe worry about how it's gonna sound. A straight pipe to muffler is gonna sound like crap without either a cat or high flow one and a resonator.

Most likely 2.25" but I'm not 100% sure. Definitely not 2.5"

OP don't go 3" unless you have some sort of F/I. You can probably get the CM catback for less than $200 shipped.

If you plan on getting a y-pipe stay away from ebay or cm exhaust cause it will be way loud. If you go that route change out the coffee can muffler and it should sound decently good.

coffee can muffler lol?? never heard of that....you talking about anything related to a fart can...cuz i REALLY dont want that lol i can get a custom bent exhast all the way back for like 250 if i wanted to spend that money, it sounds like ima have to spend that anyways regardless for a decent exhaust so we shall see. and i understand i shouldnt go 3 until i go f/i...so that WILL happen...eventually...after enough education on it
I know i wanna do either 00vi or mevi in the NEAR future but havent quite gotten the list of exactly what i need...so when i do..ill be hittin someone up on a sale...

If you are seriously considering boost I would look into the 3 inch. No point in spending money twice. I would hold off on exhaust if I were you and check out the 3 inch exhaust threads in both the 5th and 4th gen forums to see what the n/a guys are making with them and go from there.

Example of the fail with cm, ebay, or megan catback with a y-pipe
http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generation-maxima-1995-1999/622112-just-got-ny-megan-catback-installed-omg-video.html

4th gen 3 inch development thread
http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generation-maxima-1995-1999/617991-gauging-interest-3-exhaust-cattman-5.html

With a 00vi you essentially have a de-k so this would be a good read
http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...rder-here.html

Just some food for thought
