Help me with this new ALTEZZA idea

I posted things before about this idea..
Using the Paintcratch.com products to cover up the clear parts of the Altezzas.
I do not know much about paints so I am going to need your help..
I know first I have to put a tape on the part I don't want painted,
Then what should I put on first?
Primer?
it's a plastic cover right?
yea I need to know what to paint first and stuff
I think this will be an awsome project

Here's how I would do it. On older musclecars with faded lenses we routinely painted them with clearcoat to restore gloss. Sticks great, no primer needed. Wet sand all the gloss off with 600. Then mask the circles, paint the lens, peel the mask, and clear the whole thing. Or, to skip the clear coat step, mask the circles first. Then sand the lens being very careful to scuff up to the edge of the masking without damaging it. Then spray your color. If you scuffed well enough those edges shouldn't ever peel back. Clearcoated they definitely won't.

honestly it will come out like crap if you oaint the outside. I would take them apart and spray the chrome itself body color. Its much cleaner and you wont have to worry about scratching them up.

im guessin that opening them up would be as easy as opening up 97-99 tails to do the clear lense mod. good luck i think painting the chrome hosuing would look sweet.

Looks fine to me on the Skyline. Opening them up isn't easy and they may never be sealed again if it's not done right.

make sure you have a small tube of clear silicone by your side when you put them back together.

BTW RavQ took his altezzas apart and started to paint his black on the inside. But he never re-posted to show us the final product

Can they be put back together?

I'm looking at doing this also. But has anybody been able to put them back together once they have been taken apart? Why is it so hard to just glue them back? I also saw that they have the altezza's in black chrome for 95-96 MAxima's anybody seen them for 97-99 yet? Thanks!

I will be attempting this shortly.

I just bought a used set of altezzas and are waiting for them to come in. Over christmas break I will open them up, paint the chrome, and try to put them back together (although I hear this is easier said than done).

We'll see =)

I am in Virginia...
what paints are you going to buy?
I emailed them and asked them:

Order the paint with the flex additive. On the order site, specify "Bumper Paint" and we will add this flex additive that keeps the paint from cracking. If the part is not primed, make sure you prime it first. Also, follow the directions at: http://www.paintscratch.com/automotive-paint-tips.htm

Hope this helps,
Collin at PaintScratch.com

yeah, my boy Joe "JOESMAX" had a vinal graphic shop overlay them with black vinal to create the Skyline look. They look really good in person, almost looks like there painted.

Id still reccomend painting from the inside if you go that route.

Yes those look nice. I don't want to go inside because people said it is hard to put that back together and I have no idea why...
and no one wants to answer my questions..

Ya I'm sorry if you had your hopes up I had to stop the project due to some unforseen personal situations but I'm back in action now and half one side left to do. I haven't been on the ORG much lately and have just noticed they have the black chrome altezzas available now. Here is the pic I posted awhile back with one of my altezzas opened and painted. I don't have any more pics as I had to give up the project for some time. I'm going to try to finish them over the holidays.
(The clear lens is a little greasy from handling it)

I do have some tips if you guys plan on painting the chrome part of the lenses. To open them its really very simple but you must be very cautious because the clear lenses do crack VERY easily. You should use a heat gun or an oven to heat the lenses and slowly pry the clear lenses off with a flat blade of some kind. I used a heat gun and putty knife (real wide blade). Be careful not too heat them up too much since they are only plastic and will warp. You should also take into account that the outer edge or perimeter of the clear lenses have a silver paint on them (see pic above) and if you paint the chrome on the inside the silver part on the clear lense stands out. I had to remove the silver paint and repaint it black to match the chrome part I painted black. As for sealing them be sure to remove as much of the old sealant as possible because when you go to add new sealant to close them it makes it harder to close them since the sealant is on pretty thick. I heated them up in the oven to seal them so that the silicone was nice and soft. Good luck!
