Help with belt replacement

Help with belt replacement

Hey guys, looking for a little help. I started the car the other night and heard a weird noise under the hood, turned the car off and realized that the alternator belt came loose from the pulleys and slipped off of them. I looked at pmohr's video on youtube:

but realized that the part he is loosening/tightening with the socket is missing on my car. I pretty much don't have the part that turns, just the plate it attaches to. I noticed this a while ago yet I've had alternator work done since (~a year ago), so I guess they didn't use it.

When trying to put the belt back on I loosened the pulley but could not pull it down far by hand. Even with the hardest I pull down there is still a ton of slack. What are my options? Should I just lower the pulley some, tighten it, and then try to force the belt into place?

Call him, tell him the situation, he'll be able to help you out. Sounds like you lost the tensioner (or it may have broken - hey, it happens). Replace the belt too ... it's cheap and it's better than being stuck in the middle of no place cause it broke!

Thanks for the advice, I didn't think about giving Dave a call. Yeah, it's definitely missing, but that spot has been bare since I got the car. The down time waiting for the part is gonna suck, especially when I have multiple plans for the weekend :-( I do appreciate the help though, I will give him a call tomorrow!

Anyone else have an idea on what to do in the meantime, to get the car running before the tensioner gets here? Thanks in advance!

Here is a link to a parts diagram. You probably need to get the 11925M assembly.

While you can get the idler pulley & belt from a local parts house, if you are missing any other pieces, those are probably "Nissan Only". Your only other option to get it done quickly is to visit your local junk yard.

Thanks for the diagram! That looks like it is what I need, and I may check into a local junkyard to see if I can pick one up there.

You can run the car as is, you'll just need to charge the batery (or keep swapping it with the wife units in her car! - personally, that's what I'd do. LOL)

You should be able to just unbolt the 10mm (not 100% sure of the size) bolt on the pulley and replace the idler pulley. I know autozone stocks them if you need one in a hurry.

UPDATE:

Okay, well school finally died down enough for me to work on the car. I went to a junkyard and got the tensioner pulley assembly and put that on today. Went to start the car and of course it didn't have enough juice to start up. Afterwards I looked at the belt again and noticed that it was like halfway off of the tensioner pulley. This got me wondering if there is something wrong with one of the other pulleys, the largest one towards the firewall (that the serpentine belt attaches too). There looks like there is a large gap between where the two different belts go on it. Is this normal?

I just checked mine (it's a 5.5th gen but I had 4th before and they should look the same) there is no gap, belts are sitting very close to each other. Unfortunately, don't have a solution to this, but take a look from a wheel well with plastic cover off - you may see what's wrong.

Your crank pulley is coming apart, replace now don't drive it.
The rubber bond is seperated.

Yeah, I wasn't planning on driving it until I figured out if this was normal. Guess not. Is this an easy fix? I bought a used Unorthodox Racing UDP a long time ago (it is red), would this be a replacement? If so, does anyone know which size belt(s) I would need to buy? Would the AC belt have to be smaller also?

Sorry for all of the questions guys, but I really appreciate the help!

Don't know about belt sizes, they would have to be smaller though. The unorthodox pulley would fix your problem if it fits, did it come off a Maxima? Check the unorthodox website for belt sizes.

BTW, fix your oil leaks. Thats what killed your pulley, and it will kill your engine mount too -probably already has.
