Remote start with factory fob.

My wife wants a remote start for her max for Christmas but I hate the remotes and I know she will too. My question is who makes a remote start that uses the factory fob? I know someone does just dont know who.

Also sorry for another remote start thread I know there alot of them but searching didnt turn up what I was looking for. BTW this car is a 97 auto. Thanks in advance.

Lots of alarm manufacturers make remote start systems that can be controlled by the factory remote. I STRONGLY suggest you don't go that route though. You will be limited by the range of the factory remote. There are plenty of remote start systems with nice remotes that are easy to use. Like this one: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...-N+4103V-.html

Or this one if you want an alarm too: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...-N+5102V-.html

I installed the commando EZ-2100 about 11 years ago and it's never failed. I programmed it to start after pressing the factory FOB unlock button 3 times.

Yeah, the DEI systems (viper, python, clifford, etc) are some of the best ones. If you have a factory alarm you could just get the first system and have it arm/disarm the factory alarm. The two way/paging systems are nice too but the two way remotes can be a pain sometimes.

My remote start is programmed to activate when I press the OE FOB lock button 2x. Almost any remote start system can be programmed to use the factory lock or unlock signals to trigger it.

True, but can you start it from over 100 yards away?

Personally, having had remote start on several of my cars I don't like it unless I can start the car from far away...like across an entire parking lot to warm up or cool down the car.

I literally installed hundreds of remote starts while I was at circuit city... stick with DEI products from an official dealer (otherwise you won't have a warranty, go with the better brand and you'll get another remote and lifetime warranty at a small cost - ie: rattler vs viper). Yes, you can use the factory fob, the installer will hook a negative trigger wire up to the door lock wire...once it's triggered twice it'll start the car (this is usually programmable from 1 to 3 times, as well as run-time, parking light solid or flashing). Make sure you get a competent installer.

If you installed DEI alarms (as did I) you should remember that only the alarm brain is covered under the lifetime warranty. IIRC the remotes have a 90 day warranty. The brain almost never fails as it is usually the remotes that fail. (if you get a two-way system) The only real benefit from getting an alarm installed at a authorized dealer is that they will usually troubleshoot their install for free. The alarms themselves rarely ever fail as it's usually a loose wire or faulty factory part that leads to alarm failure. (or the dreaded "the alarm killed my car!" when the car battery dies)

Alarms also have a lot of retail markup. The $100-150 alarms I linked are probably $300-400 installed at a shop. There is plenty of wiring info out there for 4th gens so if a novice takes their time and makes clean connections (solder or quality t-taps) they should have no problem saving a few hundred bucks.

I am not having anybody install it. I hate letting other people work on my car. I am almost always not happy with the results so I do all of my own work now.

I ended up getting a viper unit super cheap last night and just need to find some time to install it.

Thanks for the info guys.

Good luck with the install. The only semi-tricky thing on the maxima is the door lock wires in the door and the second starter wire. Check out www.the12volt.com ...lots of good info on there.

I'm also looking for a remote starter kit that will work with the factory remote. Tight budget. Just need to start the car. This is for my daughters car. Some of her classes are early and I figured she could start the car and get warmed up. 04 SL
