Kind of pissed off right now. Is it ok to drive my car short term without a catalytic converter? It sounds like a motorcycle right now. Does anyone know a way to make my catalytic converter stolen proof for the future? It has happened to me and my roommate in less than a month. I don't want to install another one if it is just going to stolen also.

Well, if you don't have emissions tests in your state...consider it a favor on their part. I havent had a cat since June 2008 which is when I bought the car. Eh you'll be alright, just get a test pipe or a mom and pop shop to weld in a pipe. I paid $30 for a piece of pipe welded in

No, I have emissions in my state. My car is so loud. No way I would drive without one. I was looking at universals but don't want it to sound like crap. But also don't want to have to fix another one.

Install new cat and weld nuts to bolts.

Your car sounds loud because you have an open exhaust pipe. A piece of straight pipe welded in or another catalytic converter will silence it. Theft of catalytic converters is a big business now because of the precious metals used inside them. Short of locking up your car in a building, there is no way to prevent this from happening. The thieves use power saws (sawsall) to cut them off in very short order.

I would just put on the cat for emissions, run a test pipe.

lets put it this way, about 30 min away from my house there is an auto recyling place, they take everything and pay you on the spot for your stuff, when i did my exhaust, i took my stock cat*the big one*, to them and got 60 for it, my y pipe cat was 15....

as rediculously obsurd as it sounds, them bastudddsss could hit up 10 cars in an hour, thats like 600 bucks!!! so...i say SLAM IT!! so they cant possibly get under it. at the recyling place, cats run from 15-150 bones!...all them precious medals :/...but seriously, why (as stated before) not just go to a junkyard!? jerks

From what I understand, the early 90's toyota trucks and SUV's have been getting hit the hardest. The ease of access and they have the highest palladium content out of all the OEM's.

Two of my friends got hit a few months ago. One was a 92 4runner and a 95.5 tacoma.

Or turn our catalytic converters into knock sensors by welding razor blades all over the place so that when they try to remove your catalytic they will bleed to death!

Like I almost did when I tried changing my knock sensor hahaha

yup. Just cut off the joints and weld your exhaust straight through from front to back.

wow i cannot believe people actually steal cats!?! its scary. if they have time to cut it out dont you think they would have time to jack your car up real quick?

you guys with test pipes, how much louder is your exhaust? i think my cat is clogged and was thinking about getting a test pipe. if you have a test pipe, there is no cat to steal

So, you're suggesting to somehow connect your exhaust to the alarm? I guess that's doable with enough time and money. Possible, but not plausible.

Just found out they cut my 02 sensor also. Which I figured was a good possibility. Just got emissions done on it before it happened. So will not get another one till I need it fixed. It cost me $225 to get another cat installed.

Haha I think he's talking about an alarm that senses movement (IE: Vibrations, when someone tries to jack up your car, etc.)
I think there is a sticky about modding the stock alarm system to do this...

Hopefully not. This may save your cat, but your windshield may have a brick in it by morning because it's been going off all night due to a light breeze and you couldn't hear it because you weren't considerate and parked in front of my house instead of yours and now I have to work a double shift with no sleep and I'm sure you're still all snugly in your bed in the middle of some nice dream and this is the third week in a row this has happened... /rant

I don't think they jacked up my car. That takes to long. They just slid under and cut it out. They hit the hospital next to me also.

no clown... if the car was droped low enuff they wouldnt go under it to cut the cat . ... my alarm doesnt go off with wind,, but it will if you shake the car in any way ... even if you kick the rims or jack it up...
