Sound up front... seized caliper or wheel bearing??
My 95 5spd is make a metal on metal sound when I drive. It sounds like when you press the brake pedal and you hear the brake pads rub against the calipers when you need brakes, just metal on metal.. but its constant. It does it all the time.
Any idea what it may be or how to check into what it may be?
Thanks,
Matt

Could be worn pads as mentioned above, could be a caliper, or maybe the caliper bracket.
On my 97, I had one or maybe both, of the bolt keepers securing the caliper to the bracket, sieze up. The ones that float (slide), and have rubber boots over them. First time it happened on driver side, it was rusty I was able to clean it out. I could hear the brake pads dragging, fairly loud. Second time, pass side, one was completely siezed up. New brackets were cheap and easy to replace. Keep the bolt keeper well lubed with caliper grease

**also if you caliper is seized and you actually have meat left on the brake pads that that wheel will be very hot after driving...so just touch all of your wheels after normal driving and see if one of them is much hotter than the others.
another thing to consider... does the sound change at all when you turn or step on the breaks? i had a siezed caliper i could feel/ hear it rubbing at low speeds and once i was driving on it for a few minutes it started to smell cause the pads were getting really hot.
on my last max i had a bad wheel bearing and i was almost like a humming/ gringing sound.

Thanks man, I had a metal-on-metal sound too and a bunch of dust on the wheel. I was sure it was a seized caliper and was going to buy one until i read this thread. Turned out it was just the dust shield rubbing the rotor.
does it change when you hit the brakes ? does it change when you turn the wheel ? If it chagnes when you hit the brakes its the brakes. If no change its the wheel bearing. if it changes when you turn the steering wheel its the axel.
lil bit of mis information. I agree with, if you hit the brakes and the noise changes, its the brakes. But it doesn't necessarly mean its the wheel bearings if there is no change in noise. Also, if you're driving and you follow a left or right bend and the noise changes, its most likely the wheel bearing. However, wheel bearing is a humming noise and is not a grinding noise.
