all out of ideas-electrical woes
on friday on my way to work,i noticed my radio shut off on its own, clock also went very dim. parked the car and revved it and my battery light came on. i came to the conclusion my alternator was done for.
the next day,i changed the alternator..turned out it was defective so i got another one and it seemed fine, altho my battery light did flicker a few times on the way home. a test revealed the alternator was charging the battery at 14v.
now..today,i went back to see if i can do anything about the battery light, turns out the connector with two pins was a little loose,so i glued it to the alternator for a snug fit. decided to test again..with all lights/heater/stereo on..battery read 14v with no battery light so i figured the problem was solved.
on my way to my girl's house..the same thing happened. clock went dim and radio shut off. i barely made it to her house b4 the car died. i ended getting my battery load tested at strauss and it failed. i bought a new battery and the car started up just fine...drove with out any problems but somehow i had a feeling that something was wrong. turns out..the 2nd alternator (120amp) stopped charging.
can anyone shed some light on my situation?
thanks..

Check the alternator fuse under the hood, and clean up your ground connection from the tranny to the neg batt. terminal, inspect it for corrosion and sand down the contact points. Check other ground connections like by the passenger headlight. Our cars are old so those areas need to be cleaned up from all the dirt that has been collecting over the years.
