The link you provided is correct, and has to do with the fuel filter.

The information you quoted from AutoGaugeMax has to do with the fuel pump.

Two different items, two different locations, two different functions.

The link you posted shows the correct way to replace the fuel filter on a 4th gen max. I read this thread earlier today and decided to replace mine. It was fairly easy. Just make sure you take off your intake, pull the fuse for your fuel pump, and and give your key a turn before you take off the filter. Makes life easier.

This thread inspired me, so I just finished doing mine on a 96 GLE. Connecting the lower hose was a new kind of painful.

Hi All,

I stumbled across this thread a few days ago and it motivated me to finally replace this filter. I've got about 86k on my '99, and in the approx 5 years I've had it I never replaced the filter.....who knows if the previous owners ever did it. Thanks to everyone as your tips did make the job easier. I did this after letting my car cool for an hour (thanks njmaxseltd!), removed my intake, and some cursing I was done. I guess I didn't run the engine enough after removing the fuse as when I removed the top hose I got sprayed with some gas. Note to all: start the car and let the engine die more than 3-4 times, or you will get sprayed like me! My filter spewed out lots of dark brownish gunk from the bottom. Incase anyone's curious I took some pics (sorry about the crappy cell phone cam).

The first pic is some crud that fell out from the bottom on to my cloth - note I didn't realize it, but I had my finger over the top.

In the next picture I realized I had my finger covering the top. I moved it and the gas with gunk started flowing out like crazy each time I shook the filter.

The last pic is where most of the gas is gone from the filter but some still remains and out flows still more gunk.

After reading a few threads and seeing a few videos, I decided to change my ff. but on the vids I watched, I realized they are all without ABS. My car has it and it makes things very tight in there, one hand can barely getntonthe thing let alone 2 to pry those hoses off. Does anyone have any tips to free up a little more space? Any help is most appreciated.

Injector service? Try driving on the highway real hard. That'll clean your injectors real good

Compliments of Google search "change 98 maxima fuel filter with abs"
http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...ially-abs.html
http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...er-change.html

Are you at least removing the air intake to make more room? If not, you should at least remove that...fairly simple. I haz no abs so I was in and out.

Last time I did mine I used a long handle barbecue fork. just wedge that fork between the lower hose and it worked for me. I also have abs.

The 300ZX will just last longer.

I'm not sure how to tackle your last question, but from my understanding from the threads I've read. The filter cleans the fuel before it hits your injectors. If it's excessively dirty, these dirt particles can stuff up the openings on your fuel injectors and will cause an array of problems.

correct me if i'm wrong, anyone.
Thanks man! Just changed mine a few days ago and my car has a little more kick when I step on the gas, now.

I think it might have been a good year or more since my fuel filer has been changed, the old one was dented and pretty beat up. No idea what the previous owner was doing to it, but sure glad I spent a few minutes and a few bucks to change it.

I changed mine and got a whole cylinder running again LOL only 2 more to go.... (just bought a 95 from non mechanically inclined people who didn't know about 91 octane!!!)

I'm 6'6" with huge hands and I only have a slight scrape on a knucke from the changing.

WIX fuel Filter

I just changed mine on my I30 with a Wix. Didn't get a 300 z filter, cause I don't mind changing it once or twice a year.

IIRC, I paid $12 for the Z32 Fuel filter from Nissan. Why not go with that?

You should be fine with that. I bought one from advance auto and have had no issues.

So why do you think the 300ZX fuel filter will last longer vs the Maxima OEM unit?

Bring this old thread up i replace my fuel filter on my 99 it was not probably changed once in 116000 so it was a pain in the *** maybe because i did not release the pressure, it was on there like some one glued it lol, anyway i got it off with the fight of my life ,had to pry it off with a flat blade screw driver .. I sprayed the new filter ends with quick lube and it went together with ease.I also had flesh wounds on my fore arm.

Interesting ole thread.. I like to replace mine every year since it's extremely cheap and difficult to get an oem one.. lol and I usually end up with multiple deep stab wounds, cuts, and scrapes. Oh the scrapes..
