Shifter Position movable?

I broke off the threaded part of my pacesetter short throw but before that i was thinking. The sts is shifted a little more towards the dash than i would like. How would shortening the linkage arm work for getting the shifter itself farther back? Not much shortening though. There is a sort of 1:4 ratio going on there so maybe 1/2 inch off the rod would move the shifter back 2 inches away from the dash... or more? Or would that just completely rape the shift pattern all together and make it impossible to ever make a 2-3 shift again.

It was used and the threads were a little damaged.... and I am used to my old shifter. So snatching 2nd resulted in my fist slamming against my e-brake bracket (my console it still out from my heater core install).

I have always had a problem with the shifter position. Even the stock shifter in 1-3-5 is too far forward for me to really reach without leaning or reaching slightly.
