Coilovers in my Maxi? Shes old, and I only gonna have her for a year. Should I!!!???

Should I do it? Motor wise she is mint. 206k miles. Interior is fresh 8/10 and body is good but shes hurting from the NE winters. Got a little rust in stupid spots like side skits, rear Q panels and fender, and I just put a new clutch in it at 200k but TPS bearing is going. So After I get the TPS bearing replaced I was thinking of doing the suspension cause I really hate how it rides. She dips a lot and its too mushy around corners and of course the dreadful squad launch.

I just can't stand it. She also looks gross cause I have a 89lbs sub in my trunk (2k wattsystem) in the rear and she sits hard on the rear and higher on the front. So I am getting coilovers. (oh and please don't tell me to get anything else then that because I know my suspension choices) lol Blues and anything is a waste of money because ur gonna spend at least $600 plus parts (like new strut bearings) so like $700 for all that and no one ones to really buy that **** after and you can't adjust.

So I was thinking of spending about a grand or $1200 on some nice coilovers prefer Tein or whatever is real good, I live in the city so some give and dampers would be nice so the ride is not too too jarring. I can accept a little jarring. I just want stiffness then when I rid my baby after 6 pretty good years of service (I only had minor issues with her shes always been a good car besides that damn input shaft bearing ahha) I wanna sell the coilovers later after that. I plan on keeping her for at least till next summer or when I get a better job.

So what should I do? I have a roomate now so I will have the money sometime before summer. PS sorry for the long post. I always need to explain things to get the bet opinions. lol Thanks for any input fellow orgers

Only you can answer that question, but

Can you financially afford it?
Are they really worth it to you?
Are you willing to take a monetary loss when you sell them?

If you answer yes to these questions, I dont see why you wouldn't get them.

I had Tein basics, and hated it . Adjusting is great but when It comes down to ride comfort springs are the way to go. Especially when you live in a area with crappy roads like me.

Ive also drivin in a max with k-sports and D2 coilovers and both rattled my brain on bumps. Was just terrible.

meh. You are just too limted with springs and struts and it really is a waste of money $200 more and u have adjusting freedom. Not to mention its easier to swap em up and don't need silly spring compressors for coilovers. You should of prob did more research on tien coilovers being the choice for you in ur area.

What about coilover sleeves? I have tokico illumina struts and springs on my car now, how long do you think the illumina struts would last on sleeves considering the strut is adjustable? Im assuming the ride would be terrible though...

unless you plan on adjusting for car shows or something. I dont see any other reason to adjust.

95% of guys that have coilovers pick a height and leave it there. No one realy adjusts on a reg basis.

also hows it $200 more?
A good spring and strut combo is $500~600 , good set of coilovers are $1000+

+1 on fix the rust . Rust speads fast if you dnt nip it.

Don't forgot all the other **** u need like Strut bearings too, pillow mounts, Camber adjusters to make it a full better experience. And some coilover packs may even come with all that maybe besides strut bearings. And you can find some for the said $900. And if you can find a good strut combo for that price then it sucks *** and isn't much different from stock cause Tokicos ILL's and good springs ran me $775 PLUS shipping one time. Plus I would be adjusting based on how often I like to change rims and tire sizes to compensate for fender gap.

OP...if the car is worth it to you, get coilovers, the majority of folks on here are going to say, go coilovers...but if you plan to keep the car for awhile/forever/until it dies in some way, then get them

I was in the same boat. I bought my 99 SE for $1,800 and then spent another $1,700 on new tires, plugs, high flow filter (drop in style), cheapo strut bar and BC coilovers. I'm only going to run the thing for a few years until I've bought a house and have the money to buy something newer but in the mean time I think it's worth it. Really it was a safety concern because the shocks are so bad it hurt my stopping distance.

I bought my BCs on a group buy here for under $900 shipped. They're adjustable (height and stiffness), totally drop in from what I've been told and they're cheaper than getting a set of cheapo shocks installed by a shop. I can't endorse them too strongly since I haven't installed them yet, but I'll try to take pictures when I install them this weekend (assuming I've got the time).

Lemme chime in here....

YO S1 man, i got blues/H&Rs. I dont bottom out, got good handling and response, decent ride quality. I say decent cuz i dislike how loud the suspension sounds when riding over even the modest bumps. Cost me around 1000 bucks and that number includes installation. If i wanted to do myself...could have saved 200 bucks.

My boy has TEINS. They good. But I cannot advise going too low. We in mass, streets is horrible. On top of needing and replacing axles, he also has had to replace splash guards, STOCK bumper and side skirts. Bottoming out all of the time man.

no matter what anyone says, you are gonna spend more for coilovers than lowering springs/struts. How much depends on what setup u want.

U say u gettin rid of the car. If i was u, i wd jus replace the struts wit some blues. Call it a day. That way u prolly spend 500 tops. If u jus gonna get rid of the car then why spend a lot of coin???

Fix the rust too man. Rust is like a cancer, if u dont get to it early it jus spreads and gets worse

My tokico illumina rears just went out and I have to get some cheap replacements while I send these off, I've read up on coilovers and such and I've read up the teins, k-sport and d2s. IMO the d2s won the debate but people have different riding styles. Higher spring rates may mean a harsher ride than what you have now. They say coilovers need proper maintenance, it is not a set and forget type set up, they need to be taken apart and greased every so often. The coilovers can be found in the group buy section.

Lol head hitting the roof when going over bumps. I have mine on full stiffness with 19s and stretched tires rides like it's on rails
