bad starter or something else?

so on saturday i was driving and i started to hear a weird loud noise coming from the engine bay so i pull over in a parking lot to check it out. i turn off the car to check under the hood and i noticed smoke coming from the starter and a burning smell. i tried starting the car again after it went away but it did not even turn over. i checked everything else electrical so i do know that the battery is fine. i just replaced the starter in april so i am wondering if the no starting problem is due to a bad starter or could it be something else

The answer is always a maybe. The only time the starter does anything is when you turn the key to start the engine. When the car is parked or the engine is running, the starter is just sitting there nothing, same as if it was in the box. But if the starter did not retract its pinion gear from the flywheel once the engine started, the engine would spin the starter so much faster than it was designed to handle.

The only way to tell is to take the starter out and have it tested. If you got it in April, it may be under a warranty. Most places give you a year warranty.

Sounds like your starter burned out. Did engine sound normal? Or something was grinding?

Definitely sounds like starter. Did you install yourself or did someone else?

Either way, make sure it is grounded off.

Sounds like the starter gear got caught up with the flywheel and got spun so fast it probably ruined it. Sometimes aftermarket starters don't fit exactly right, and need to be shimmed at the mounting surface.
