I would say it's one of two things. First, check the linkage as suggested above and second check the detent bolt at the top of the trans. You can see it under the air box (if you're still stock, or below your CAI if not). You can also see it if you pull the splash guard out of the way and look at the trans housing from below. If you lost that bolt, you could have a detent ball stuck in the shift rod. You would likely be loosing a bit of gear oil as well if that bolt is too loose or missing. Check those ... my best advice.

If it is a syncro that has frozen, it's not toast, but will require a complete (IPS and MS every gear, every syncro) tear down and rebuild. May not be worth the trouble. Giver er' a 6spd swap and call it a day.

G'luck

DAmn bro that sucks.

Like others have sd, u can check the linkage down to the tranny and see if thats broken. If the synchros are toast then u might as well replace the tranny if u can find one.

Im doing some research about the 5spd trannies. Did u ever replace the gear oil in the tranny and how many miles on the car and how many miles u put on the car.

I bought the tranny from .org member about 4 months ago and had it put in.

Sorry, best I can do it point to it on the FSM (field service manual) - if you don't have one, get a .pdf copy and go to MT - pg 14, top picture is the bolt I am referring to. Keep in mind that in the picture, the housing is on it's side. That bolt is the uppermost bolt on the drivers side of the trans. If you have gear oil there, you gotta problem. MT - pg 13 shows the bolt ... it's # 3 in that exploded view diagram. If that spring broke behind that bolt, that could also be causing this issue.
