Fuel Pump Relay Replacement for 95 Max
I have been battling the intermittent starting problem for almost two years. (If interested, you can check out the thread http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...ate-start.html). Anyway, after a recent ineffective attempt with a new ECTS, I decided to give a shot with a new Fuel Pump Relay - I know it is not a wise idea to tackle the problem by throwing new parts, but since the problem is intermittent - only happened after car had sat for hours and usually it gets worse in warmer weather. So here it goes for a new Fuel Pump Relay (not necessarily the only candidate, but rather an easy target - it is inexpensive!) It has been a week since I replaced the relay, and I have not had a single problem of starting, but on the other hand, my test on the old relay showed it was working properly. So I still can't conclude that it was the culprit. Only time will tell.
So there is really not much to say about replacing the Fuel Pump Relay, you will need a 10mm wrench and a flat screw driver (to pry it off the bracket). It is about 10-15minutes job. The only hard part is to locate it. On 95 it is behind ABS control unit (if you have one) on the driver side. Here is a couple of pictures that might help:
(1) Remove the driver side left foot kick panel (look next to the lower hinge of the driver side door) - There is one plastic nut hold the panel, you can remove the nut by hand and pull the panel off.
(2) Once the panel is off, you will see the ABS control unit held by two 10mm nuts - one on the top and the other at the bottom (covered by the carpet).
(3) Remove the nuts and push the ABS unit aside, you will see an aluminum padding. (The relays are hidden behind the padding.).
(4) Peel off the near side of the padding, you will see a bracket bolted down with two 10mm screws.
(5) Remove the screws with a screw driver (or 10mm wrench). You should see two relays held together by a bracket.
(6) Here are the relays - one of them is for the power sun roof and the other is the fuel pump relay. I don't remember which one is which, but it is easy to find out if you remove one the sun roof stops working, then you got the wrong one. You might need a flat head screwdriver to pry the relay off the bracket.
(7) reverse the steps to put everything back.
