Starter (i think) noise sometimes
Do folks think this is a starter issue and if so.. what brand replacement do folks like ?
I turn the key.. it starts to crank.. and then after a few seconds of normal cranking.. (if it does not start).. i hear a raspy sound.. similar to if one turns the key once the car is running (not that i'd ever do that ! )
Likely a starter going bad ?

If it's grinding (sound you're describing) it's actually possible it could be your flywheel, based on what information has been given.
Your best bet is pull the starter and inspect the flywheel teeth all the way around (as well as the bendix on the starter, spin the motor manually with the crank bolt or have someone help you do so to inspect the flywheel), all the teeth should look pretty much the same all the way around on both starter and flywheel. If those pass inspection reinstall starter and see if it still does it.
It is possible that it could be the starter, but it's one of those things that you'll just have to remove and inspect. You'd be wise if all other checks pass to have the starter tested at an auto parts store, but that depends on if you have a way there or not w/ the starter out of your car.
I honestly just got a duracrap [gold] starter from autozone earlier this year just because that was the closest place to me, haven't had any issues with it to date.
