Drivers Side halfshaft issues.....

ok so im replacing my DS halfshaft this evening and its been a pretty straight forward job before.....i seem to have some issues getting it to come out of the trans....i have everything unbolted, lower strut bolts, wheel hub bolt, and caliper out of the way....and i pulled on the half shaft for until i felt the inner knuckle pop out of joint....then i thought id try and pry it from the trans w a pickle fork and a hammer and lastly wrapped some wire around it with some chain and tried to yank it out.....it has since come out roughly 1/2 in and stops there....dont want to damage the trans and jw if theres any other suggustions.....

btw car is 5MT, non abs, non LSD.

Thanks.

This happened to me years ago.

Typically, what you'll want to do is push it back in, and yank it out in one pop. The circlip can be a real pain sometimes.

But, Nothing would go for me. I ended having to fab a pipe/bar to go through the differential, and allow me to hit the end inside of the transmission with a 3lb maul.

Not really recommended in any way, but that's what I had to do.

Use a prybar or large screwdriver to remove it!

Out of curiosity, is this your OEM one? Because I still have mine but I see the rubber boots starting to get brittle. Is this your same problem or you replacing the whole thing instead of replacing the boots?

Pull it back out and use the the joint to help you out pull the axle until you see the cv boot expand then pop it in the trans like a pogo stick kinda way do that until its seated

i've tapped on mine with a hammer after getting the axle in as far as it would go, and then get the joints as lined as i could. a couple of good whacks & it popped in. if you use a block of wood, you're sure not to damage the end of the axle.

What makes it more of PITA is the cv grease....i swear everytime i replace an axle i manage to get that frickin grease EVERYWHERE!!! ugh....anywho i cant believe i cut the inner boot....i put a bar against it and was hittin it with the maul and it slipped an cut thru it....so AZ had to ship another axle in and im gettin it tomorrow and will be installing this weekend....ill review afterwards....

Thanks for all your help....

ok as a final follow up to this whole pile of crap.....i was able to get my hands on another axle from AZ after a few days and being swamped at work i decided to have a local shop whom i trust install it. for some reason the axle was stuck in the trans and they couldnt get it out....they even bent a 7 ft pry bar trying to get it out.....they had to take off the pass side axle and pound the axle out of the diff.....the reason behind this? a faulty c clip on the end had mushroomed and wasnt allowing the axle to move at all, in or out.....the said theyve never seen this before (not the first time someone has used that phrase in a negative way with this damn car lol)...whats worse the new axle had the same faulty clip in it. the shop replaced the clip and put it all back together....$125 in labor later and it was done. im not getting AZ axles again....next time its raxles......

+1 You came out of this one easy.

D/S Axles suck bawls, esp. if your transmission blew up and there's pieces of it in the axle preventing it from getting out... We had to take apart a transmission one time to get an axle out of the diff.....
