My '98 Max GXE has 199,XXX miles on it & is still running strong outside of the Valve-cover & Intake Manifold gaskets leaking (Parts=$70), OE Coil-packs needing to be replaced, OE struts being replaced this week.
I would find a '99 SE & save up for a VQ35+6 spd manual+headers+y+cat-back+Phantom Grip+Coil-overs.
Bottom line: You can't make a 5 or 5.5 look like a 4. You can make a 4 run/handle like/better than a 5/5.5.

Welp.
I had a 96 SE 5spd and I loved the car...and I have a 2002 SE 3.5 6spd now and I love the car.
You can't go wrong if it's got a hamburger...or the leftover impression of one someone shaved off
IMO if you're just getting into modding your car and want to go to some extremes, start with the 4th gen. There is a ton of info here on the .Org. IMO there seems to be a 4th gen bias :P A lot more how-tos, active members, parts available etc, I mean one of the top stickies is "So you think you've found a new problem with your 17 y/o car." These guys have seen it and done it. That might mean the difference between paying a big shop bill or a Saturday printing stuff from the FSM and the .Org. 4th gen imo is a bit easier to work on...
I've had 25MPH over tickets in each car The 3.5 just gets you in trouble quicker (literally...I only had the car a week or two LOL)
And I'm feeling nastalgic since I just picked up a 95 Max again.
Oh and find a manual transmission. Just learn it. It's going to be far better for you in the long run. i've gotten calls in the night from friends wives etc that couldn't drive a manual and so and so needs to go to the ER NOW. I'm fast but I'm not faster than a straight trip to the hospital. You will learn to love it and if you ever drive one you will see why you wan't it and if you're going to then have a vehicle with a manual transmission it might as well be your pride and joy - the maxima.
