I put a post up sunday about my wife totalling the max and here is the story with the car side of it.

Insurance adjuster looked at the car yesterday and said he got to about $6k on his estimate and just stopped counting so ya its totalled. His first offer to me was just based on NADA high retail and it was $3365 with tax minus my $500 deductible so I would get $2865... I said I just bought it for $3840 2 months ago and I looked for a while and thought i got a good deal. So he said he would do a online search for comparable cars and let me know. He called today and offered me $4369 minus $500 so $3869, $29 more then i paid for it. Nice... so i said yes.

Question, he sent me his appraisal form he used and the buy back value said $450 and I was wondering if it would be worth it to buy it and part it out. It had 179k miles and the engine and transmission were great and interior was spotless too. Plus i think the passenger side doors are ok too. Seeing as how i am getting most of my money back it would be cool to make some money to go toward the next maxima. I have a truck to drive so I am not in a big hurry to get one.

What do you think?

Don't buy it back. Move on and buy another. $4369 can get you a really nice 4th gen or a decent 5th gen.

I imagine the engine is ok but don't know for sure and the tranny could have been damaged from the axle/wheel being hit so hard.

I would like a 5th gen SE but they are so hard to find with a 5 speed that's why I may just sit on the money for the right deal to come along.

For only $450 I'd buy it back. You could easily make that back parting out salvageable parts.

Time = money
If you have the "free" time to disassemble, photo, host, sell and ship everything then by all means go for it. You also need a spot for the shell to sit as you take parts off, then disposal of it when your done.

My .02 take the money and run. Leave the wreck for the scrapyard.

i work at a body shop and honestly hits like those just screw up the radiator and just shift the engine but i honestly cant tell since im not there in person to see it but its up to you i would think to part it out cause you will make the money for sure and you'll benefit some fellow org members but its your call weather you take the risk of buying it and everything being ok or not.

You only had the car 2 months so that does suck. U cd try to fix it if u have a mech u trust and know is competent.

Hell i got into a front end and got it all fixed with insurance money good as new so its doable. BUT, i had plenty of mods in my car and jus lowered the bish so i still wanted the car.

In your case, u only out what u paid for the car and now u got it all back. I would take the money and find another car or upgrade.

PS... the insurance story u posted is a good reason why i ALWAYS negotiate with insurance. They are going to low ball you. Its what they do. They will give u much more than what they offer, all u gotta do is ask and stay firm. Trust me man, the money they end up paying out is much less than what it would cost them to go to court if they really **** u off.

Don't buy it back and get a 5thgen. My first 5thgen was an 00' GXE with 144k on the dash and I got it for $2400, second 5th gen I had was an 00' SE with 187k and I paid $3k. Just be patient and find local used vehicles, I wouldn't go to dealers. I bought all these cars off of private parties.

i would buy it back and part it out,if not you can find a 5th gen for cheap with good miles.If you live in the tri state you can pic up 5th gen for 3500-5000.
