Is this a CA Emmissions car?

Dumb Question:

On the label under the hood, I see "this car conforms to US EPA and CA Emissions Regulations..."

Does that mean this is considered a CA emissions car?

Thanks,

more than likely.

what's the year? the 99's are teh only CA spec maximas that are annoying, the other 95-98 years are ok.

Quick way to tell: get down on ground near driver and look towards the middle of the car, you'll see the cat. converter. If it's got an O2 sensor sticking out the back, it's FED spec. If not, then you're Cali spec.

Or if it is stock or not heavily modified, you can pop the hood and check the wire harnesses on the front of the engine block. Fed specs have just two things connected there, an O2 sensor and something else.

The Cali spec has two o2 sensors and two other something elses. like here. Below where the plastic valve cover says V6 3000:

Yeah... it's a '99... and that's what the connectors look like. I have another thread going on trying to find an O2 sensor that fits bank 1 /rear since the replacement I got is 3 wire and the connectors are 4 wire aside from the front sensor. It suddenly dawned on me late last night that even though the car never left the East coast that it might be California spec. That is probably the issue.

I think this means I have FOUR O2 sensors... I will have to check under there again. At least three of those front connectors are o2 sensors... don't know what the fourth one is.

Easiest way to tell 99 Cali:

the 1st O2 sensor is like "right there" near the top of the exhaust manifold.

On my 98 California I30, you can only reach the 1st O2 sensor from below.

On the '99, is the connector for the bank 1 upstream sensor located in front with the rest of the O2 connectors? Or is it towards the firewall?

I only see three connectors that look like O2 type sensor connectors on the front array, and I've found all three of those sensors below. I'm figuring there's a fourth I need to find that is the one that needs changing.

As soon as I get an hour to go get dirty again I am going back under, but if I need to be looking somewhere else, that would help.

Thanks,

Easiest way would be to locate the sensor itself, and follow thr wires. How many wires are attached to the sensor itself?

Problem solved... with the knowledge that there actually was a 4th sensor on this (CA emissions) car, I went hunting and located it.

The engines are the same. Its all the emissions equipment bolted to it that is different. You can't just swap everything over either. You'd need to swap the EGR, LIM, front exhaust manifold, Y pipe, ECU, just to name a few. Then you need to wire it all correctly to make it work.
