i was driving down the road tonite coming home doing about 70-80 and the steering wheel was shacking real bad. now i have a few ideas but i would like everyones opinion. i think it maybe tie rod ends or maybe my cv joints but im not sure

 

Start with a tire balance and go from there. It's possible a wheel weight might have come off.

 

Rotate wheels from front to back and see if that makes a difference

 

99% of the time it's improperly balanced tires. Especially if it's only in a specific speed range. Example: only shakes from 73-76mph. Any speed faster or slower there is no shake, it's most likely a balance issue.

 

yea it started out just under 80 and now its over 80. i will try that first and see what happens thanks everyone

ok so i stopped by the shop today when i got off work to see if they could look under the car, found out i need 4 new tires cuz the inside of them all are shot and i need lower ball joints plus a 4 wheel alignment. so i am goin to save up the money and do the ball joints myself and then take the car for an alignment

 

I had a similar shimmy/shake at highway speeds and took the car to the tire place nearby, to check on alignment / balancing / rotation. The tech immediately noticed that the front tires hadn't been rotated with the back ones, and he thought a simple rebalance and rotation would fix the problem. Sure enough, problem solved for ~$65. If the alignment were off, it would pull, whereas if it simply shakes / shimmies, then it's often balancing or rotation that is needed, per the guys at this place.
