MIL light on with no codes

The MIL (check engine) light is on but my scanner didn't pick up a code. I can't erase any codes either.

What can cause the MIL to stay on?

Use a better scanner...the light will NEVER come on without a code.

Go to the parts store and get it scanned, then report back.

I came in to say the same thing. My scanner does not read codes from my Max for some reason either, but it'll read codes from other cars and other scanners will read my Max's codes. Get, or at least get access to, a better scanner and you'll be able to see the codes.

Just like when you are sick and the doctor says nothing is wrong - go get a second opinion.

Went to the local Pep Boys and their scanner pulled P0153, O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response Bank 2 (left/front). Looks like this was new for 1998 cars since P0153 is not in the 1997 FSM I have.

I should have asked them to clear the code and see if it comes back. My CodeKey reader can neither read nor clear the code. I went ahead and ordered a bluetooth type reader to see if it can read and clear this code.

A local shop fixed a leaky valve cover gasket and replaced the knock sensor a few weeks ago. They didn't "click" the cylinder 6 ignition module harness and it eventually came loose then the car ran on 5 cylinders for about 50 miles. May be all that fuel fouled up the O2 sensor. Cylinder 6 ignition module is under the pretty plate. I have no idea whether they did this on purpose or not.

I was able to erase the code. I will drive it and see if it comes back. Thank you all for the suggestion.

For future reference, you can check and clear the codes yourself with no scanner by following this LINK

Thanks, you guys are so helpful.

I did check the online copy of 1998 version and it does list P0153.
