Bought a sweet '96 today
I was looking for a Maxima, Infiniti, Lexus, Accord EXL or Solara Camry in my price range. And I wanted low mileage and cheap/reasonably priced (not asking much, eh?). Had to have sunroof, heated seats. All other bells & whistles are usually included. Wow, Accords were overpriced IMHO. Loaded Camrys hard to find and almost all plain models.
I narrowed it down to about 3-4. There was a '94 Lexus LS400, 1 owner, with 57K miles. Couldn't tell if it had sunroof... never dug deeper to find out. Then a '01 Infiniti with 88K miles. A few others that were close but not in contention for price, mileage, etc...
I settled on a '96 Maxima with leather, sunroof, dual power/heated seats, Bose, 2 sets of alloy wheels (one set with new winter tires, one set with summer tires). Has remote start too. AND.... only 39K miles!!! I paid $1K more than I would have paid for the Infiniti, and same price as the Lexus. I figured with that low of mileage, hopefully I can buy myself a couple of years of not having to sink $$ into it.
Only minor gripes: not a huge fan of white paint. Black leather interior too. Minor gripes and I'll get used to it.

Congrats on your purchase! Only 39K miles on a 16 year old car is AMAZING.
Very reliable....its gonna give you years of fun and no worries.
I'm not a fan of white either but if you look at the rides like Tigerhsarkdude, you'll see how they make an interesting black and white contrast of their ride. It dresses up the car nicely.

apparently I jumped for joy too quick. This AM i went and saw seller, made our deal and gave a deposit. We talked about how you used to be able to rely on a handshake, and nowadays it's hard to trust people. So I handed him a cash deposit with no receipt and we shook hands and I even commented that we had a solid handshake deal. He was busy for the morning so we agreed I'd go to bank and come back in afternoon.
then his wife & daughter gave him heck and he called me 2 hours later to cancel the deal. deposit refunded. I just wanted the car and was all stoked. Now I have to begin a new hunt. And majorly bummed out.
it wouldn't be as bad, but part of my motivation was my diesel truck needing $8,000 in repairs and me needing some alternate transportation, so I am in a bind to find replacement, which usually ends up with me making a bad decision.
I can only cross my fingers and hope he changes his mind quickly.

39k just means the car was'nt driven enough by a nissan enthusiast. these cars were meant to be driven, not sittin!! there's plenty o maximas out there, just keep lookin and dont rush. check rad support and trans and make sure you get records or car fax. stay away from infiniti unless clean and under 100,000 miles. hope he see's the error of his ways!!

I hear ya guys, I am always warey of low Ks and potential speedo roll back or swap out. we have air care program where they check your speedo every time you go in for 2 year emissions compliance. i checked those records and all good/added up. more reliable than carfaX (for mileage).
owner is a straight up guy. his wife initially wanted newer car, etc... if i was in his shoes I'd tell wife it's not worth the extra $$, and would hope she'd see the light. i can only hope she changes her mind and wants something newer soon.
My problem is getting past my OCD and the fact i need something soon.
i also missed the boat a few weeks ago on a 2001 Camry with all options i wanted..... 25K miles, grampas car... for $7500. story of my life... day late and a dollar short.
