How to replace the serpentine belts.

I recently purchased a 95 Nissan Maxima and was hoping someone could give me some advice/direction on how to repalce both belts. I've never changed belts like this and really have no idea where to begin. Is there a book or instrucion manual available anywhere for purchase. Thanks in advance for any direction.

The only hard part is getting the tension right. What I did was tighten little by little until the squeal went away, obviously on the tensioner. Better than over tightening and effing up something. Not difficult but if you get it wrong then it could be bad in the long run. The deflection specs are in the FSM but I don't know how the hell to measure that properly.

i usually just eye it, little under 1/4" of deflection from underneath.

I usually just tighten to the point where the belt stops slipping, then tighten it just a bit more.

You know it doesn't matter right?

The way I do it . . .

- loosen tensioner then pulley (I do it in this order to eliminate an extra trip from ground to engine bay)
- take off serpentine belt
- cut off ps belt
- put ps belt partway on crank pulley and then work it on by using ratchet to turn the crank. This eliminates trying to loosen the pain in the *** ps tensioner.
- put serpentine belt on
- pull on pulley to remove most slack then tighten.
- adjust tensioner from the top.

Thank you for the replies and information. It appears that some here get very irritated with questions like this and feel the need to lash out. Truly disappointing.

I thought this forum was for people like me with limited mechanical knowledge where we could ask questions in hopes of learning something.

Max Ride 41...I'm sure you know everything there is to know and learned it all just by being you. Must be nice to be you.

On my own car, I had the belts replaced at about 60k miles, which is probably overkill. Later, when I had to do a water pump and it was time to remove all the belts, I discovered that the mechanic who re-attached the power steering pivot bolt used what had to be close to 100 ft/lbs of torque on that bolt. I'm lucky there was no damage. And that is a very difficult bolt to loosen when there's that much torque on it and you don't have a lift (I have jackstands).

If you don't think that was nerve-wracking, you don't know jackstands. Har. It had to be said.

You must loosen pulley bolt before loosening the tensioner! If you mess with the tensioner before loosening the pulley bolt you are going to strip the tensioner bolt. You are just putting tension on the pulley bolt if you don't loosen it, which will make you strip the bolt.
1st
-Loosen Pulley Bolt
-Loosen Tensioner
-Remove Belt
-Install new Belt
-Tighten Tensioner
-Tighten Pulley Bolt.

If belt squeals you must loosen pulley bolt, then tighten tensioner.. Do it the opposite way and you will strip a bolt.

Bullet knows the correct way, as for the rest of you...

Its a very simple job. I dont want to be rude and tell you to simply search. But if you search "98 maxima serpentine instructions" im sure you will have success. Check youtube as well. Dont be intimidated. Worst case just run up tandnapa or advanced and get help.
