Power Antenna lowers when braking

Sorry - retry with this post...

I have a 1997 Maxima

Over the last 2 days, I've noticed the following problem:

- Drive for 20 minutes or more.

- Turn on car radio. Power antenna raises.

- At some point, if I apply the brakes to the car, most of the time the power antenna lowers itself after a few seconds. The radio stays on during this ordeal.

- "Waiting a minute or two" or "shutting the radio off and on again" will get the power antenna to go up most of the time

In situations where I start the car, drive and apply the brake within a few minutes of driving, the power antenna stays up, but there's a slight crackle coming thru the speakers?

Has anyone had this problem and if so, how did you solve it? My local mechanic told me to take it to the stealership and although I love my Maxima, I want to try to avoid a high cost.

Thanks

Do any of your other electronics dim out?, is your brake and battery light on? Battery hooked up properly?

None of my dashboard lights illuminate to report any problems. The battery connections seem fine.

Thanks for your reply. I'll gladly provide more data to help troubleshoot this issue...

Check the antenna motor. With the radio on so that the antenna is up, wiggle and shake the wire that connects to the antenna motor and the motor itself.

Hi - I'm told that the antenna wire connection looks good. Recently, pot holes have developed on the roads here. My ride is bumpier than ususal and with that, the behavior does not change when I drive over a bumpy road which may eliminate a "loose connection" as a cause.

Additional data:

I put n a casette tape that has a wire handing off of it to play music thru my iPhone. The antenna does not go up, which is the proper behavior. While playing mysic thru my iPhone/Cassette wire thingy, I do *NOT* get any speaker crakling like I do when listening to the radio and applying my brakes.

Also, I noticed that a light on my tail lite closest to the side where my Power Antenna is out. I will post a picture of it if I can figure out how to do that. I am pointing my finger at the area where the light is out

That's a side marker light. Shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Inspect all the sockets on the 1157's in the tail lights. Check for rust, corrosion etc.

what I would do,(and have done since my mast needs to be replaced) is pull the antenna out carefully, and unplug the antenna motor.

that's me though.

Look at page EL-322 of the FSM; it shows the wiring harness layout. The wires for the power antennae and those side lights are in a common harness that runs across the back end of the trunk and ends on the passenger side of the trunk where those things are located. I would examine that harness - looking for a place where the wires/harness might be pinched or worn. Good luck.

You could have water inside the antenna, that has happened. Not all that hard to take the antenna out of the car and remove the cover and look inside.

Another possibility is that the head unit is bad. If you have a Bose system, this is a real possibility.

if they have a wire or two in common then maybe you should inspect a few fuses related to lighting and accessories. It always seems to be a "oh of course!" on these issues when you find the actual cause of the problems... i got my car wrecked so i've had a good couple of these situations.
