Transmission only dead in drive
I have a 96 GLE that just stopped providing power in Drive only. It has no problem with 1st 2nd or reverse. I thought I'd get some input here before looking at it tomorrow.
Thankfully I was able to drive it home in 1st after it decided the Drive was the new Neutral.

There's no difference between trying to start in D or driving in 1 or 2 and shifting directly. There's also no partial position around D that I can move to get a response, so maybe a solenoid?
I'll try the diagnostic with the fsm now.

So I'm too amateur and took it to my mechanic who thought the 1st didn't didn't sound good either (although I don't feel a problem with it) and suggested a replace at $1800. 2nd is actually slipping before engaging when shifting from 1st and it didn't do that initially, so I tend to agree.
Since this car has 304k miles on it and I can see a few problems on the horizon, I think this might be the end for this one.

Is that for parts AND labor? I've seen several newer VQ30s for sale WITH transmission for that same price. If your body is good, think about replacing the whole thing if you are willing to spend that much. It will be like a new machine!
EDIT: I'm talking about replacing the engine/tranny just so you know.

what alot of people tend to overlook is that the warmer weather states like texas and florida and cali have these cars cheaper cause they're not rusted out and therefore the lower mileage maxes are more plentiful and cheaper. hell, 150,000 mile maxes around pa still go for 4,500 to 6,000!!!!!!
