CV axle came out of CV boot while replace struts/shocks
Today I was trying to replace my old stuts/shocks with Monroe quick struts.
The boots on the CV joints (the boots nearest to tire) have been torn for some time and I was going the get the CV joints replaced next week along with a clutch job after I installed the quick struts.
Anyways, while I was moving the brake rotor/axle around to fit the quick strut in, the axle popped out of the joint in the torn CV boot. I could not get it back in after trying for a while and gave up. The joint was moving around, grease was everywhere, and the teeth on the axle have to be lined up perfectly.
Is this normally able to occur or is the joint in just bad condition in just fell out? Is there a way to easily pop it back in the joint to make it safely drivable to the mechanic 16 miles away?
I bolted in the quick struts and put the tire back on so I can have it towed as a last resort to get the CV axles replaced. Hopefully towing it like that won't damage anything in the 5sp manual transmission
Searched and couldn't find any answers.

If the boots were torn for some time then it is possible there was extensive damage but more than likely there is a clip that keeps the joint connected that broke causing it not to stay connected. Just replace the axle, you already have everything a part, take the axle to the parts store with you so you get the right one.
