So What The Hell Are Axle Seals Really Called?

I've been online shopping and searching for what seems to be friggin hours ...

It doesn't seem that any parts retailers carry anything called an axle shaft seal for the 4th Gen.

Are they known as something different?

I can find "wheel seals" but nothing that is clearly a CV axle shaft seal.

If I contact my local dealer will they know what I'm talking about if I say "axle shaft seal"?

Are you looking for the front wheel seals? There are 2, one on either side of the hub bearing. Or the transmission output shaft seals? Where the cv shafts go into the transmission?

That terminology seems to have been the key.

I'm getting some results now.

Much obliged.

Good luck!! I just had to get a pair for mine...there were a lot of options for part numbers. I ended up getting one of them right and one wrong when I ordered them. I ended up having to go to the local auto parts store to buy the right one. I even got the part numbers from Nissan and one was still wrong.

Just remember, both sides are different part numbers. but don't ask me which is which.

EDIT: These are the ones I ordered, but like I said, one was wrong just not sure which one. This will take you to the rockauto.com website in the output seal section.

If you can't figure out which part number you need, I have the "WRONG" one at home and can tell you which one didn't work for me.

NATIONAL 710124Output Shaft Seal $ 10.13
NATIONAL 710397Output Shaft Seal $ 10.67

Cheapest place to buy them that I have found is (amazingly) Nissan.

Left side (driver) # 38342-03E00 -> 38342-81X00 $7.67
Right side (pass) # 38242-03E01 -> 38342-81X01 $7.80

Just bought them in April. Autozone wanted $11 for the right and $12 for the left.

Goes to show that the dealer can be a better value at times.

No problem!
I found something similar with the EGR tube gaskets. About $4 at O'reilly, and only $1.35 at dealer.

Know any way to cross reference those numbers Dennis for future reference? Those seem like the Nissan part numbers I was given but something must have gotten messed up in the translation when I ordered my National Brand from rock auto. Dealer here was around $12-13 each so depending on where you are, dealer may NOT be the cheapest.

Rock Auto was like $5 and some change shipped...as long as you ordered from the "right place" since they ship from different warehouses and shipping rates differ.

I posted Nissan part numbers. The way I typed it was [original part #] replaced by [new part #].

As far as cross referencing, I looked up prices by description, not number. It is up to the manufacturer (such as National) to provide the cross referencing to the parts store. Maybe if you went to National's web site, you could get a cross reference. I would try using the original part number before trying the replacement part number.

This is what I found last year when I was working on my 97 (and yes, when I have to spend time researching parts for my car, I document it and save it if I think I might need it again) -

Autozone - Timken brand
Left side (driver) # 710118 $11.99
Right side (pass) # 710124 $10.99

O'Reilly Auto Parts - National brand
Left side (driver) # 710118 $22.99
Right side (pass) # 710124 $22.99

The above prices are from last year when I looked it up. I checked Autozone's prices and today they want $19.99 for each side. Robbery!

Last year I did use the Timken brand from Autozone on my 97, so those are good numbers. Interestingly enough, the Timken and National brands use the same part numbers. You said that you had one wrong seal, so I guess that would be the 710397 Output Shaft Seal. But I didn't buy the National brand because of the price the parts store wanted. I remember looking at NAPA Auto parts, but their prices were even more ridiculous than O'Reilly Auto Parts.

I didn't check Nissan's price last year for some reason, probably a brain fart (btw, Courtesy Nissan is the closest dealer to me).

dumb Q but asking anyhow...these are the "axle seals"...the seal between the front axle and tranny, correct? I need a new DS one so I should get the "38342-81X00" one from Nissan directly, yes? Small drops of trans fluid under car, not big puddles just drops

Yes, these are the seals that the axle goes through to hook up in the differential. If it is leaking, of course it needs replacing. But check the axle and see if it is worn. I had a leaking driver's side seal on my 2000 and I grabbed on to my axle on the joint just outside the differential and shook it. It wobbled. I crawled under my 97 and shook it. Like a rock. Wanna guess what else I had to replace?

Sure, I'll guess...the differential bearings, yes?

I'm an auto so that's not likely my issue though

Got new axles installed when I bought the car a year and a half ago and now have to get new DS axle again, but it's under warranty (Autozone)

Differential? NO NO NO! Thank god. My problem was the axle. That joint in the axle closest to the differential is a in-out joint for length compensation and I was surprised that it had all that play in it. The rubber boot was in good shape and I couldn't detect any grease having leaked out.

I have 2 cars and have replaced 3 axles. I bought all of them at NAPA after reading many threads here. I bought the NAPA brand (they have another brand). They have both new and reman but I bought the new ones. Costs more but I hope that I won't be replacing them anytime soon. I did my 97 at the beginning of Oct last year and after about 9 1/2 months, they are still OK.

Is your transmission the VLSD, RE4F04V? It does have a different left side seal than the non-LSD.

Non-VLSD seal
Seal Outside Diameter (in): 2.334
Seal Shaft Size (in): 1.535
Seal Width (in): 0.669

VLSD seal
Seal Outside Diameter (in): 3.551
Seal Shaft Size (in): 1.831
Seal Width (in): 0.472

Earlier when you said you had a National seal number of 710397, that seal is for the RE404V transmission. But I can't find a Nissan part number for it.
