Well...glovebox and wheel locks

I've just become the owner of a '97 Maxima with a bad automatic transmission. In order to pull the transmission, I've got to remove the wheels-but they're "secured" with what I assume are factory wheel locks. I haven't found any tool to remove the locking lugs, and I guess it's off to the tire store to see what they do when they run into this, since I'm guessing that this isn't the first time this has happened to someone. But if anyone here has been through this before, what did it take to get the wheels off?

I also realized that I've never looked in the glovebox. Turns out the glovebox is missing the button that opens it, and although I've removed the two screws on the bottom of the glovebox door, I haven't gotten the door off yet, and I'd like to do it without destroying the dash. Got to find that wheel lock tool!

I'm pretty sure that Nissan did not supply the wheel locks. It was probably the previous owners. Talk to some tire shops. They may have some keys or know of a way to remove them.

The glove box will be a little trickier. To start with, you need to remove 8 screws to remove the glove box, 4 along the bottom edge and 4 on the upper inside edge when the door is open. Just removing the bottom screws won't let you get inside the glove box.

The glove box does not use a button, it uses a pull handle kind of similar to the outside door handles where you lift up on the bottom of the handle. The latching mechanism is made out of metal, only the pull handle is plastic. There is an arm on both ends of the pull handle that hold it in. The arm on the left side is the one that releases the latch. Depending on how the pull handle broke off, you might be able to grab onto the arm with a needle nose pliers and pull out on it. I'm pretty sure that drilling the lock out won't help.

not to knock dennis here, but just go to a locksmith for the dash and they'll be able to open it up in a second. as far as the wheel locks, they are from the dealer new on the car. i had a shop strip one of my wheel locks a few years ago and and they ordered straight from the dealer. about 40.00 a set back then, might be more now, gl

Thanks for the info. There's barely anything left of the glovebox 'release button' hinge, I haven't seen anything that I can grab with needlenose pliers, etc. Maybe cautiously going at the plastic with a cut-of disc, etc. who knows? Going to look at a few of them in a bone yard first to see how they latch, open etc. Thanks.

Ahh, projects...
