too much oil.

So i changed my oil recently and afterwards I noticed I developed an oil leak. I tightened down the drain plug and oil filter but realized that I probably put too much oil in. My question is since I put too much in will it ruin my gasket or drain pan or anything like that? Will it stop leaking when there's enough oil in? Do I have a permanent leak now? Any help is appreciated thanks.

How much more oil did you put? An extra quart isn't going to do any damage. If your car was leaking from the plug it's probably because you didn't put it on tight enough, not because you put in too much oil. So retightening it should fix it. And if you want to get rid of the extra oil just drain some of it out.

I'd be worried about seals if there's too much oil. Why don't you just check the dipstick? It's there for a reason.

Too much oil wouldn't cause a leak. Not tightening enough Or cross threading the bolt will cause it to leak. I remember I was (and still) am getting a funky sound from the timing chain side of the engine and kept putting in oil because I thought it was low. On the next oil change I emptied out 6 1/2 quarts. The leak is something else probably just your drain plug.

The leak is coming from a random oil pan bolt -_- it is small and I did check the dipstick and its at the full almost a little past but not. I've already lost quite a bit of oil I'm sure but not a lot. If my oil continues to leak is there a sensor that will pop up telling me my oil is too low?

overfilling the oil enough WILL cause seals to leak and foaming in the crankcase. anything above a smidge above the full mark is too much

how overfull is it exactly? like 3-4mm above the full line isnt gonna cause a leak, anything more than about a quarter liter is bad news. you cant rely on sensors to tell you when your oil is low, you need to get the leak fixed or until then check the oil level daily via the dipstick. oil lights come on when theres not even half a liter of oil left in the system

I accidentally put in too much, blew the precat into my flex pipe causing it to clog on the highway. Hasn't leaked since.

Not sure why some members are saying too much oil will not cause any damage. You had better get that extra oil out of there ASAP if you don't want to be dealing with a RMS replacement because it will be ugly on the pockets..

I've never had any issues dumping 5 quarts in.

adding 5qts is 1cm or 2cm above the mark line.

This is true and I have done it myself. When you take it to a shop, its not guaranteed that all of the oil will be drained. Had a shop overfill the engine because they didn't drain out all of old oil and that was the very last time I had someone do my oil changes. It was so overfilled, that I emptied 2 quarts for it to come back to normal and somehow the car drove 500 miles without smoking.

I have a nice one for ya, friend of mine went to get his car detailed and his oil changed and a place around me. He always puts Royal Purple Synthetic in his Mazdaspeed 6. He left with the car feeling slugish and odd. Gets home and checks the dipstick.

They forgot to drain the oil. So lets do some math.

6 Quarts + 6 Quarts = blown seals.

I didnt forget to drop my oil I just put in 4 quarts and eyeballed the rest and now I have a leak. Cant be the oil or oil filter because I used the same brand my last oil change and nothing happened.

if the leak started right after you changed the oil, its too coincidental to not be the oil filter or drain plug leaking. take a look at both

if the old oil filter seal sticks on and you put a new filter on, a double seal will leak oil. usually the oil will **** out in that case but could be what happened to you

Wow that's crazy. I do my oil changes with the engine at normal op temp(180ish). Yeah the oil is hot af, but it all comes out, and quick too lol

4 - 1/2 quarts? Can you say overfill? 4 - 1/4 with filter change on my 95.
