Should I buy a 97 Max SE with 130k Miles?

Is $7500 worth it for a Max SE with 130k highway miles. The car in question is a Black/black leather, auto, every option. The owner did all the factory maintenance and the car has new brakes and tires. The tranny was rebuilt, I drove the car and it drove fine. I'm just a little skeptical about a car that has had that many miles put on it in such a short time. I plan on putting about 25k miles a year on it. I know I should get the 5-speed, but I really need a car ASAP and I cant find any 5speeds for under 10grand. What do u guys think? Is it worth it?

Drove it on the highway..took it upto about 80mph. Drove VERY smooth. Owner also told me that all the transmission line fittings were leaking or something and he had all the hoses replaced. Black leather interior is in GREAT condition. The exterior isnt that great. Lots of chips on the hood and couple scratches...not too abnormal for a black car with that kind of mileage.

I think that its not too bad a deal. You can easily double that mileage without major engine troubles.

I think its a decent deal as well.

I paid over $8K for our 97 SE 5 speed with 118K miles. It runs like new, and the engine even looks like new.

All we have done so far is change the oil.

???????

You are buying problems if you buy a car w/ that many miles on it. It may drive fine now but w/in the next year you will most likely have problems, if not sooner. I just bought a 97 SE Maxima w/ only 66,000 miles on it for only 13,500. I would be patient, a better one will come along sooner or later. But your not gonna find too many 97 Maximas w/ low milage under 10grand.
-Just my opinion.....let me know what you think?

I'd pass, '97 still had the mechanical odometers and 130k is suspicious. 7 grand is alot of money, these days you can buy a new car for about 12. That's with 0 miles and a 5 year bumper to bumper. There's alot more to a car than the purchase price. If I were you I'd spend 2500-3000 more and take about 55,000 miles off the clock. That'd be money well sepnt imho. If you still want that car, offer him 5. You'll probably end up spending 1500 easy to fix it up.

i think it's a good deal too.
only thing i'd worry about is the transmission. But looking at the milage, it's probably mostly highway driving, so tranny shouldn't be bad. Have it checked out, if it's good, I'd try to negotiate down a little bit... see if you can get it for like 7 grand

The 5-speeds are going for more than the auto's? I didn't know that. Thought it was the other way around. Unless it's because the 5-speeds are so rare. I got my 96 SE 5-speed last year with 48K on it for just over 10K at an auction. I've nothing but good about the Max's engine life. 130K is just breaking it in. Especially since it's highway miles, I wouldn't worry about it.

If the car was driven mostly highway miles then why did the tranny need rebuilding??

I say its a cool deal. The paint isnt a problem really , the engine will go at least to 200k. My dad works with a guy that has like 240k on his 3rd gen, and my dad says its still like new (except the leather, but hey , what can you do). I say go for it and enjoy it. Just get the tranny checked out before you buy it, at a nissan dealer or a good tranny place. if they say its ok, go for it. Good luck

Re: Should I buy a 97 Max SE with 130k Miles?

I have a 95Max and I put on quite some mileage since I got it at 44k. I have about 130k on my car and I drive it everyday for about 100 miles daily. It has not giving me any problems although I drive it like a race car. But, for $7.500 I would not buy it. It's got too many miles. Look somewhere else. Good Luck!

I drive a 95 Maxima SE with 128K. Bought it right off the showroom floor(it was the display model with all the GLE upgrades- sun roof, automatic temp control, heated seats and mirrors, black leather,Bose stereo) with 20 miles on the odo. Quite a bit of highway miles. Did the 30,60,90 and 120k service at the dealer. Runs like new after the platinum plugs were replaced during the 120k service.

Make sure you get paperwork on all the major work done on the car. If the guy really took care of his car, he should'nt have any problem giving you his paperwork or atleast the name of the dealer/shop that did his routine maintenance.

Good Luck!
