Thoughts on Catback?

Looking to get a new one, or one in general. Spending limit isn't really an issue but don't want to go too too high. Under 300~ Been looking at just regular eBay to what's in classifieds. What do you guys have? Clips? How do you like the sound? If you have an aftermarket ypipe please let me know. I have one as well.

Thanks

Just have to pick a muffler, and or resonator.

That is likely where I'm getting mine.

Considering there are a gazillion sound clips in there, I'm surprised you can't find something you like, regardless of a few broken links.

Not much has changed over the years besides the somewhat recent "build it yourself" MES system and lame Ebay exhaust systems.

I think a lot of people nowadays are going custom as some of the main players (Stillen, Greddy) are discontinued.

If you only want to spend $300, you're gonna have to pick up a used system or the MES system I think...

I agree with the others. Use the MES for the piping, and as far as the resonator section.... this is my choice:

The cheapest one I could find on eBay.

Worm clamps around the muffler hangers solved the low hanging muffler issue seen in the video.

I have a Megan ... for about 5 years now.

I like it.

Very nice (quality) piece; nice non-ricey sound; very good fit.

Stock diameter is 2.25" I believe. In a section or two, it's crimped even smaller.

Going 3" really depends on your performance goals and what you want out of your Max.

IMO, that MES system sounds like crap and I"m not too thrilled about those flanges either.

4th gen catback will not fit after your mercedes swap.

On another note, did anyone try the ebay catback and chop off the can muffler and put something like a flowmaster? Never heard a clip before.

That video of mine if that's what you're referring to sounding like crap was only about 5 miles into operation......As the exhaust fills with soot/exhaust deposits it mellows down quite a bit and softs any raspiness that exist.....My mufflers are huge both resonator and rear main and the idle now it nearly not audible....The sound is mellow and smooth.....and everyone does have thier personal exhaust hole and an opinion!

What about the flanges???? The rear flange is a gasketless ball socket design...(OEMs still use the hell out of!!!!) easy to adjust any angles needed when positioning your exhaust system......The front is your typical welded on 2 bolt flange using OEM SS gaskets, Copper gaskets or the El Cheapo fiberbased gaskets.....So what's your hang up Wizard???

Why even post a video of a system that's not broken in in the first place? Worthless.

I don't like this style. Seen too many over the years develop exhaust leaks. I much prefer the typical flange to flange setups with a gasket, or v-band setups. To each their own.

I was in a hurry to post the exhaust video due to Orgers wanting a video ASAP and the system had no mileage yet! So that's how & why that happened....I've got those ball/socket joints on my 3rd Gen headers and they're leak free and gasket free....Thanks for your response I value your opinion Wizard.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I was hoping to get a few more details on CMax's setup.

CMax, is that the optional resonator from MES? If so, is it the 14" or 18". Also, which muffler is that? Finally, what paint did you use for the coating?

Thanks!

MES option are 14" or 18"....I choose neither! I believe the bigger the better whan talking about mufflers...I choose Magnaflow p/n: 10436 and for rear mufler a 5" x 11" Magnaflow p/n: 12576. Forgot one thing the paint is regular high temp duplicolor engine paint (1200*F) I've tested on headers and it doesn't flake off at all if properly installed!!!!!!!! My test was for 6 months and my headers never flaked at all!!!!! Get this from your local auto parts store!

I haven't made any videos since it's been broken in....But I will....It's pretty freakin quiet definitely compared to the Flowmaster only exhaust system it come with! The Ypipe is a Warpspeed Ypipe....I'll probably put some EBAY headers on this just to see how they fit and perform.....I'm sure they'll outperform the Warpspeed ypipe! I have a 2.5" Metallic Substrate Cat on my 5.5th Gen that will be upgraded to a 3" Metallic Substrate...I'm running my 5.5th OEM Cat currently on my 4th gen.....

Some nice and "El Cheapo" priced SS tips are found on Kool-Vue tips are awesomely priced I spent about $50- $75 at the exhaust shop that welded up all my flanges and hangar hooks...
