i have a 97 maxina
and i have a humming sound
coming form the rear wheels
i`m pretty sure its the wheel bearings
the question i have is can you get just the
wheel bearings or do you have to replace the whole hub
assembly ??

i just checked on Ebay, it looks like you can either get the bearing itself and press it out or get the whole hub. whole hub isnt much more expensive and honestly i would rather quickly replace the whole hub than fight with pressing out the bearing

 

Had this issue last month. Check for play to see which side it is first, or both if needed. The rear wheel bearing noise is very deceiving as it echos through the cabin. I had a bad left rear wheel bearing and i thought it was the back right as the way it hummed through the cabin i was sure it was the right but the left bearing fixed my problem. U can do this task yourself depending on ur mechanical knowledge its a pretty straight forward job. But change the full hub assembly as if the bearing is bad theres a good chance the hub is on its way out. Plus Rockauto.com u can get the hub with the bearing already pressed into the hub in one piece and save u the trouble. If you take this to a mechanic the part should be anywhere from 60-80$ i believe and probebly 150-200 in labor charges so DIY if u can! But again confirm the side the faulty bearing is located. Go to the rear of the car and jack up the rear wheel and check for play at the wheel. As i said before the sounds will deceive u echoing through the cabin. Be sure to also check for a stuck rear caliper or a tire issue as well but my bets on the bearing
