99 with possible fuel pump issues
Ok guys, I just bought a 99 maxi 5 speed 3.0 twin cam literally a day ago. Ran like a champ yesterday and this morning needed boosted off. Battery is brand new so I'm assuming alternator issue which is no biggy. Real problem is after boosting, I got a mile down the road before it sputtered and lost throttle response but idled fine. Roughly got it back to the house and continued to work in my truck. This afternoon it wouldn't even fire at all except when I sprayed starter fluid in air intake and it died within seconds. Does this sound like fuel pump issue?

Welcome to Maxima.org.
Now from one another 99 SE 5MT owner to another, do not try to start the car while sitting in it with the door open. If you are going to try to start it, get in and close the door. My son accidentally immobilized mine by trying to start it (actually a compression test) with the door open. I've read about several owners who accidentally immobilize theirs when there is a hard to start issue. If the security light stays on after you turn on the key, you may have already immobilized it. If the car has been immobilized, it often requires a tow to the dealer to get NATS reset.

Thanks a lot guys, and yes the security light does stay on and I have started it with the door open. So that may be the issue. And I found it on craigslist lol.... and I love it! So much potential in this thing. The torque is ridiculous

The immobilizer shuts off the fuel delivery system.
If you have immobilized, try this:
1) Lock the car.
2) Disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected over night.
3) Next morning hook up the positive, then negative cables.
4) Unlock the car (Hopefully the car will recognize a valid key)
5) Get in and shut the door (Security light should be blinking)
6) Hold the accelerator all the way to the floor
7) Turn on the key and hit the starter -- don't let up until 2 minutes passes or the car starts.
I got this to work when my son accidentally immobilized the 99 a couple of months ago. Honestly, I don't understand why or how it worked.
There is also some instructions around for resetting the immobilizer by turning the key 3 times but I have not been able to get that to work.

My key is factory... not sure if it's immobilized, just saw the recent responses but I did run a diagnostic on it and it read codes for bad O2 sensor. However still could be immobilized because diagnostic won't check for that

Heres what I know. On my 97 when the alarm is on the car will not crank or anything. But in your case the car cranks, so I think its not your security system that's immobilized its probably a bad pump.heres a video of how to check and change your pump. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e11aWNXOtjY

same issue
Im dealing with the same issues... but instead of doing my research,I had a mechanic look at it, and we changed sensors, fuel pump, injectors. Even the ignition. So with all the new parts,$1,000 with labor. Car still wont start. I believe its juat immoble, but now I have a new ignition with a key that isn't chipped, so I hope there's a way I can somehow use the new ignition and jerry rig it some how, like hold the key to the ignition to get it to read the code....

Yah,the security light is staying solid and not flashing. Im pretty sure that the dealer can reset it,but since I changed the ignition and the key that came with it is just a regular key,I wonder if I have to just have a chipped key made, then have it coded to the system. I had to buy my wife another car bcuz of this, so hopefully I can either sell it as is, if its going to be alot for the dealership to fix it,ill just part it out. That would take time, but id gladly pay someone to dismantle it so I could have parts ready to go.. I've definitely learned my lesson on this issue, man I wish cars were simple like they were 30 years ago. Down here in florida theres alot of maximas, and ive talked to alot of people about the issue and alot of had similar issues
