teach me exhaust
Sorry if theres a thread on this already but ive looked up and down and cant find all the information im looking for, maybe theres less to it than i think
Looking to replace my exhaust system on my 99...just the pieces under ther car
Can anyone explain what all the components of the exhaust are necessary and which arent
And what exactly are the laws and what can i get away with
Im not looking for anything extreme just new basically because the cat looks pretty burnt and i wanted to put this ractive muffler on but cant be welded on the rusty pipe i have now...
Not looking to spend a ****load of cash either

Id look up the laws in your state instead of relying on what someone says on the forums. Some places have emissions requirements and some dont. You will need to know emissions info for the county you live in.
Exhaust system is as follows from the engine back:
Headers
Y-pipe
Catalytic converter
B-bipe
muffler
All of these are necessary for one reason or another.

You're right, there is another thread floating on this, it's yours too .
I'm tackling my exhaust at the moment. I'm leaving the stock cat (still good + don't wanna run without one) and gutting everything past the headers.
I'm using a warpspeed y-pipe and a cheap ($180) eBay stainless cutback exhaust.

For those interested there's a custom exhaust available from Warpspeed and MES....

A tubing kit is cheap with minor fab/cutting and welding required....I would suggest a 22" long resonator, and 5" x 11" x 22" rear muffer fits like factory and gives a great quality exhaust note that's very civilized and throaty when at WOT...But if you go with a kit that includes a muffler you can call and opt for their largest Magnaflow which is 18" x 4" round but again a 22" x 4" round will fit....GL. I saw a fellow Orger's 3rd Gen maxima with a Warpspeed 2.5" system custom bullet type resonator, but with a 5th gen twin tip Oem Muffler and it wa really nice....I realize a twin tip muffler won't work with our single slotted rear facia/fanny pan....

i just replaced my warpspeed y, ( 2nd one ) and my cattback started hissing and then blew out a nice hole when the hanger on the resonator rusted and broke free. got that fixed but decided to replace whole cattback when i realized the back of the muffler was rusted bad and was leaking. i had a spare resonator from pacesetter, ( sent to me in error ) and got another monza muffler which i'm going to paint black with high temp intake paint and i'm going to put a stainless steel mid-pipe in the middle. then, it'll be all new again and ready for another 7 year run.
