How to fix dim headlights?
On my '99 GLE I don't think it's a voltage issue. The lights don't get dimmer as you roll down the windows or anything of that sort. They're just not very bright. When driving at dusk I always have to ask my wife 'are the lights on?'
You can't really tell! You can see when it's dark but they could be a whole lot brighter! Is this a common problem? Are they just getting old? Am I just getting old? Would upgrading to higher end bulbs solve the problem? Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you're headlights are hazy, get and do this:
This is sold at Amazon, Autozone etc.
Then go to Autozone and get the brightest Silverstar bulbs available (there are 3 tiers, go for the brightest and most expensive). Each bulb is $25.
Those two things will make a big difference. That's what I did any way and now I can see again!

Meguiars really works magic to make headlight lenses look like new.

more than 25 bucks, but yeah, the SilverStars are good. Be careful to not get your bare fingers on the bulb itself.
I do the 3M kit instead of the Meguairs above, but same basic thing.
I just did mine, this pic is before and after (but I wasn't done with the buffing "after".

Thanks for all the replies!
I bought a headlight restoration kit. The Meguiars Heavy Duty kit was $30. Right next to it on the shelf was a Turtle Wax kit on sale for $8.99. It had the same basic ingredients, sanding pads, compound, sealer, etc. I went cheap but it made all the difference in the world! The polycarbonate lenses are now crystal clear and the headlights very bright! Now I can see where I'm going! Driving down to LA tomorrow night. Should be a good test!

How long does this sort of thing last? I've heard that once you eat through the top protective layer of the headlights, they will tend to get dull much faster. I'm also suspicious about the headlight "sealer" spray that you can buy. How much protection could a spray really offer? I've been doing some googling around about possibly spraying the headlights with some clearcoat after restoring them. It seems like people have long-lasting results doing that.

I did this on a 94 Nissan Quest, it had really hazy headlights, and if you're really tight on money, baking soda and water, mixed into a thick paste works the same, with lots of scrubbing, I had them looking nearly new in about 30 minutes, and how I kept it from coming back? Sprayed plastic clearcoat over the lenses and so far, in two years, it hasn't came back! Hope this helps!
