issue with idler/tensioner pulley
When I twist left or right on the adjusting nut of the tensioner pulley nothing happens. This is with the whole unit taken apart, so the lock nut on the pulley isn't the reason. Does it need to be replaced?

Look thinks over really well to see if anything is broken or missing. I had 4th gen Maxima that had pieces of the tensioner assy missing when I bought it. The previous owner tight the belt by hand and called it good.
If the 14mm nut that holds the pulley in place is un-tight, you should be able to spin the big 14mm nut from the top and get the belt loose.

My tensioner was all stripped from the previous owner. Go to a wrecking yard and get one. They charged me $5. Just make sure it's not stripped before you pay for it. This seems common because of reverse threads on the adjustment.
