99 Maxima running after the key if off

I just bought a 99 Maxima 5 speed that needed the timing adjusted starts great and runs and drives beautifully other then it runs for probably 5-10 seconds after I shut off the key? sounds like its running on 4 or 5 cylinders in that 5-10 seconds? cant figure out the problem Any body knows why it does it do this? thanks!!

Ignition switch maybe? Its weird that the car is running after since I thought fuel delivery automatically stops in fuel injected cars when it is shut off. I could be wrong though, i'm sure one these maxima gurus can chime in and be more helpful.

Sounds like leaky injector pintle caps and carbon causing it to diesel.

Did it keep running before the timing was adjusted?

No the car didn't run before I did the timing.

Strange I would expect that turning off the ignition switch would kill the spark. Engine can't run without spark even if fuel is still being provided.

Regardless your timing adjustment is probably causing the ECU to continue to give the vehicle fuel and/or spark after the ignition is shut off.

The term dieseling is used because the engine is running like a diesel engine does. A diesel engine does not have spark plugs or ignition coils. It has a glow plug that does exactly what is name implies. The combustion process heats the tip of the glow plug until it glows red and that ignites the fuel. In order to start a diesel engine, an electrical current heats the tip of the glow plug so that it will ignite the fuel.

Timing that is too advanced can cause the tip of the spark plug to glow and therefore ignite fuel. Combine that with a leaking fuel injector, the ECU is not even in the picture.

Usually the spark plug in the cylinder with the leaking fuel injector will have a black tip instead of a light tan color. So pull the spark plugs and examine them.
