Maxima ranks #5 for most long lasting cars:

 

to be honest im surprised the Legacy made the list. but yeah 1st-4th gen Maxima especially are bulletproof, never had a major problem on my 3rd gen until 400,000km. ive worked on 4th gens with 400,000km and just the rad support is eaten out, everything else keeps truckin

 

Makes sense. Ours was at 330K and it took a tree to KO it. All we did was oil changes and gas.

 

I don't see 2nd gen on road anymore, occasionally, I saw 3rd gen but a lot, I mean a lot of 4th gen on the roads, I would say more than I saw 5th gen and 6 gen except the 7th gen.

 

2nd gens were only made for 4 years and lots of the ones sent to the junkyard were probably running and driving fine, sad really

Anyway, I am not surprised the by the vehicles on the list. I have always said Toyota, Nissan, and Honda were the best. My father had bought 2 new mid 80's Subies and they rusted out pretty quick. I guess that left a bad impression on me early on, but in the last few years I have realized that Subaru is great too.

 

Nice to see the Maxima made the cut.

 

Maybe I'm late to the party here, but at 165k miles I've had to replace the power steering, alternator, radiator, harmonic balancer, ignition coils... I have issues with my heater core that I'm still working on. That's all in the past 5 months since I bought this beast. Despite there being a "J" at the front of my VIN, this particular specimen doesn't seem to be the pinnacle of reliability... I still love it and can't wait for things to stop breaking... but... I have an '04 made by a different Japanese manufacturer and at 165k miles it hasn't had *any* systems fail on me yet.

 

You bought a 16 year old car used.

So why does the previous, or perhaps several previous owners, get off?

 

My wife reminds me of this every day... And I'm not shocked by the problems it's having.

Somewhat ironically, the previous owner's husband has been helping me fix it lol... The vehicle belonged to the previous owner's mother from the time it was new and was maintained by the father. It appears that he may not have maintained it as well as it was made out...

Too many dependent variables for a control group! I realize that my vehicle is not representative of *all* 99 Maximas, but I've been surprised by the sheer volume of problems I've had in the past 5 months. So I'm not trying to bash Nissan, and I really do love my car, but I can't say that my particular specimen has been overly reliable. Since I've done all the work on my own (with help) the overall cost of the vehicle is still very low.

 

all of those are wear and tear, 165k miles its to be expected

 

My 4th gen was still going till it was hit while parked on the street....guy was reaching down for his phone. It had over 230k miles. It was a very reliable ride.

Yup, right in front of the house. It ended up on the sidewalk.

 

dam he must of hit it quite hard. silly people can't wait or atleast stop the car to reach the phone.
