wondered if a maximum dip stick oil level causes more oil to leak on the maximas. Mine seems to.

right at the maximum level is fine, even a quarter litre over maximum is fine. half a litre over the maximum mark or more is when you start blowing seals

No it shouldn't matter. When the engine is off, the oil is in the pan or stuck in valleys and not under pressure, so unless your pan has a hole in it, the level isn't going to matter.
Engine running, the oil is moving and under pressure, regardless of the mix/max level. If you've got leaking seals, this is when they are leaking.
