96 SE with RS5F50A manual trans (correct oil seal?)

1996 Maxima SE with RS5F50A manual trans w/limited slip

Last night my daughter and I were replacing the left (driver) side CV axle. We put in a new oil seal on the transaxle, but then the axle would not go in all the way. Yes, I do understand that it needs to be inserted "sharply" because of the retainer ring on the end of the splined shaft. The splines mated fine and the shaft went in most of the way, then the problem...

We tried using a 12-lb sledge and were not able to get the largest diameter portion of the axle shaft (the portion next to the dust-seal) to go into the new oil seal, which has an I.D. that looks too small comparing it to the old seal. The parts store may have given me the wrong seal and I'm hoping one of you fine experts can help confirm if this part number is correct. I can't get the answer on the internet after searching for the OEM Nissan seal part number.

Oil seal CARQUEST #710124
The CV Half-Shaft from RockAuto is CARDONE SELECT 666157 (66-6157)

Yes, I was dumb didn't compare oil seals before putting in the new one. But did they put the wrong seal in the correct #710124 box?

I'll start with the oil seal. You had the wrong seal.

710124 = right side (passenger) seal
710118 = left side (driver) seal

The 2 axles have a different size yoke (the piece that goes into the differential).
Right side seal has I.D. of 1.299 inch
Left side seal has I.D. of 1.535 inch

Seals and gaskets are cheaper at the dealer.
Left side (driver) # 38342-81X00, MSRP $8.57
Right side (pass) # 38242-81X01, MSRP $8.72

But as for the axle not going in, I really doubt that the oil seal was stopping you. You should have been able to push it in since the seal is neoprene and should stretch/split. I had the same problem replacing the left axle on my 2000. I couldn't get it to go in. I pulled it out, laid it on the floor, swore at it and tried it again. Went in like it was supposed to.

Had a nice reply written... I hate how fast this forum times me out, hit "back" and lost my message when it asked me to log in again.

Anyhow, thanks for the good info, Kind Sir!

May I ask where you find such precise dimensions & p/n information, I have not been able to stumble on anything so helpful with web searches.

For the dimensions of the seals, I was on an auto parts web site and it is under the specifications tag. Check out this link: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...keyword=710118

This was maybe 2-3 years ago when I had to do both axles on my 97. I wrote it down and kept it in case I ever needed to do the axles again.

Another thing I learned at that time was that the part number, such as 710118 or 710124, was the same part number for every manufacturer of that oil seal.

To avoid having the forum time you out, there is a check box to the right of where you type in your user name. Click on the box and it won't log you out, even if you shut down your browser. Come back and you are still logged in.

Thanks for the tips! O'Reilly seems to have better detail than most.
