Clearing taillights problem.

So I met up with greddymax@aol today in pa and got the 97-99 taillights from him. Very helpful guy and cool btw. anyway, I went home and decided to start clearing them. I use a hair dryer and it works perfectly. My problem is that I cannot cut a clear template from flourscent lightning cover that fits in the space...how can i do it. I check out brianv site and maximadriver.com.and i use the search. help!!!

yea, that is the problem i ran into and which was the most time consuming for me. Basically, what I'd do now if I would do it again (and I will since i messed up) is cut out a template out of paper or something, just keep trimming it down until it fits right in. Or just take out the orange piece along with the little red corner piece, line them up and put the paper to the flat side and trim it down. then take the template and put it to the flourescent light cover.... what i used to cut it out was a dremmel tool... but I remember "NickStam" suggested using a soldering iron? Scissors etc.. will just cut it out uneven and crack it.. but the other stuff makes a somewhat smooth edge.
good luck

make some type of template and use a soldering iron with a 'needle-like' tip.

Dremel with a cutting disk

That's the fastest and cleanest way.

Remove the yellow part and the red lense paste it together as it was on the car, or use double sided 3m tape to hold the yellow and the red part together and then grab a carton trace around it and then trace around the white stuff and cut it. It will bring you very close and then use some sand paper and shape it. Good luck it will take you about 1 hour if your picky like me.

I also used a dremel, but with a drill bit that cuts sideways. I used a peice of paper to make a template.

Yeah dremel is the best!

I used a piece of cardboard to make a template. I covered the entire turn signal portion and covered up the side marker too so I couldn't use the orange piece as a template. I recommend getting a piece of cardboard cut to fit in there then you have a template to use for both sides ... you just flip it over!

I used the amber lens as a template and cut it out with a jigsaw using a fine blade. Heating up the fluorescent light material with the hair dryer will prevent it from cracking or chipping. I just did 3 or 4 inches at a time, quit, reheat and continue, the last inch or so is the most critical for me. Then sand to make exact fit. I have a motorized sander in a shop so it was very easy.
