it's threaded on, but glue is also used. i suggest that you wrap a towel around the shifter and then used a wrench to twist it off. you should hear a crack when the glue breaks.

If the plastic insert gets cracked in the process, it will be loose. Otherwise it will be snug but you still need glue to fix it in place with the proper orientation; after it has been loosened, if you try to re-tighten it down, the **** will stop with the **** at an angle...

I took some bubble wrap i had laying around, wrapped it around the shifter, and then used a monkey wrench to twist it off. after I loosened it I took it off by hand.

Bubble wrap? I am suprised that worked! There are quite a few write ups on this subject search around. I think they reccommend using a towel (to wrap the ****) and vice grips to turn. You will hear a pop or crack when the **** moves.

Well I had some laying around from something i ordered. The towel keep slipping and I could really get a good grip from it. The bubble wrap gripped pretty well though. Got it loose in one twist.

Sorry ... don't mean to argue....that probably sounded harsh! I had the same problem with dry towel, just wet it and it gives a lot more grip!

yup drastic but the thing was aggravating.
i dont consider it a ghetto short shifter- i call it a cut down stock shifter
i stated before that a STS and cutting down are two COMPLETELY diff things- as long as you know the throw will still be the same travel and dont call it a sts if its not
