HELP: Car died and unable to start

1996 Infinit I30 automatic

Car started to stumble and lose power. Once parked, everything fine. Then a few miles later, car just died and unable to start.

Tried to start but starter would not crank. Called AAA and a few minutes later while waiting tried to start the car and it started and idled fine. But my radiator fans were not running so I pulled into a parking lot.

No fuses blown.

Please help!

Stan

check your transmission fluid, battery connections. Your alternator might be on its way out causing your battery to discharge or in other words its running on the charge it has left.

Thanks for your response.

I am sitting here with the car idling.

The auto trans fluid level is good, recently changed. The battery terminals are on tight.

As the car idles I wiggled the key in the ignition cylinder and it doesn't shut the car off (thought the ignition switch was bad).

+1 on alternator, if its not holding its charge..then you lose your power.

Your battery terminals might be tight, yet might be corroded. I suggest cleaning them before moving on to the alternator. Some of the auto parts stores might be willing to run some tests to find the problem.

I have a weird symptom that doesn't make any sense.

As I was driving home, the car would studder at times. When sitting at a red light, the idle would drop to almost 0rpm (earlier it did drop to 0rpm and the car died).

I could feel the loss of power as I was driving on the highway. No check engine light at all today.

Got home and read the codes:
P0420
P0430

Doesn't the '96 I30 not have precats?

I will keep note of that. Thank you.

I did re-open up the MAF again to re-solder all of the connections in there (they looked okay). I also cleaned up the battery connections. We'll see how the car runs tomorrow.

On a side note, I had a ***** of a day troubleshooting my '95 Hardbody failed ECTS. The OBD1 ECU would report something wrong with the ignition, but actually the ECTS was bad causing very difficult starts.

Drove the car yesterday and today with no problems.

I guess re-soldering the AFM or re-tightening the battery connections fixed the problem. Most likely the latter because the ECU never had an AFM trouble code.
