Help - Only car I have for the family - Starting issue

I have been following this threads lately, but no help. so hopefully someone can chime in with positive advice.

My 99 Maxima GLE started yesterday and then stopped. I tried to restart engine and it just cranked over. So I installed a new fuel pump, it did not start, hours later I changed the spark plugs (they were probably originals ( 182K ) they were worse condition i have ever seen on spark plugs, ( bought car few years back and put 50K on it )

Car started and ran but 1 minute later stopped running. So i had a new fuel filter installed that just now and still no start.

Pulled coil pack and install SP inside and it gets spark, while my friend cranked engine, thinking a fuel issue.

Any ideas????

EDIT* I did noticed the plug to the fuel pump in tank did not connect or snap in but it is still pulled in. Maybe its not touching the spades inside?

You need 3 things for ignition.... Air, spark, and fuel...u say you have spark...and I'm assuming air is no issue....check the electrical connectors at the pump with a meter...make sure u have power to the pump...and get that connector to click if you can...if you have no power check fuses relays all that...

Is the red security led that is in the dash on or blinking when you are trying to start the car and it won't? This probably isn't the case, but since it is so easy to check, please do it.

You haven't verified if the engine is getting gas. Go to any fuel injector and see if the red wire has 12 volts on it what the ignition key is turned on.

Another thing to try is unplug the MAF. If the engine starts, the MAF is bad.

Ok so I finally got back to car. ( work out of town )

I got the connector to snap this time on the fuel pump

then car started but stopped, so I unplugged the MAF connector and the car starts.

But if you put it in gear or press gas pedal it stalls.

So I am going to buy another MAF and see if the car will be drivable.

Hoping this will fix the issue. Any thoughts guys???

Appreciate your advice.

Make sure you have no vacuum leaks. Check hoses and kinks on the intake.

Did you pull codes at all during this process? Looks like you just threw a few hundred in parts at it. If the car starts and dies, it should throw a code of some sort.

what FINKLE said. There is a sticky to read the codes w/o a reader if you don't have one.

Ok, car has no "check engine" on

Update so I got the car started , with maf sensor plug back in. drove car around neighborhood runs great ( need a muffler )

So today I drive the car 20 miles one way to shopping mall and turn it off , come out 30 minutes later starts great drive back and then sit in traffic on interstate because of accident. get off my exit car still running , sit at red light still running, take off and get around turn and car dies. I turn if off and it starts back first try. I then drive towards home and get some lunch car still fine. I did notice at one time few miles from home when i gave it some throttle it kinda bogged down, but otherwise I was doing cruise at 65 mph then passing cars at 80+ on interstate.

- also cleaned MAF yesterday, did not look really dirty.

Any thoughts on this???

When i had trouble starting the car ( start of this thread ) I removed the MAF plug and car started, then cleaned MAF and plug back in and car ran fine around the neighborhood.

then I drove it first time on the hwy today...

Open up the MAF top cover and resolder the connection points in there.

- Need spark plugs ( helped )

It could be as simple as bad grounding points. Negative terminal on my car was very worn out and was only starting every other crank until I checked the condition of it and replaced it. Also, replace the maf and report back to us.

Car starts easily. In fact I work out of town a lot and car had not been started in weeks and it started first time.

Also I decided to get another MAF off same year Maxima, still not working correctly.

What is your idle at currently? it's supposed to be around 750 I believe, for automatics.

Yes Its 750 or so. Going to ground out the battery to the frame, maybe motor to frame also. ( was told locally to do that )

If the car accelerates fine for brief periods, would the coil packs be bad?

Any other ideas?

Check the wiring harness between the engine and firewall. It could have broken insulation on some wires. Push it and pull it while engine is idling and see if it dies.
