Whats a good cat-back for the money?

Hey I've been looking for a cat-back exhaust for my 95 Max, I can find a bunch easily but I don't know enough about the brands/ details to make a comfortable choice. What's a good cat-back for not a ton of money? I really don't want a super loud exhaust but I do want one that sounds nice and helps with performance.

What brands have you come across in you research?

The brands I've found by doing a quick and dirty google search are:
Pacesetter, Megan Racing, SLP Performance (all around $350)
Magnaflow, GReddy (around $600)
I know Magnaflow and GReddy are great brands but they're a little pricey, I don't know the other brands that well. It's also difficult to find details on the size of the pipes/resonator/etc.

eBay/Amazon or piece one yourself using Mandrel Exhaust Systems piping kit.

I know I can just buy a cheap one from Amazon or eBay but what I'm trying to figure out is if there's going to be a major difference in quality or performance by getting one brand over another. If they're all the same I can just get a cheap one for $160 but i doubt that the ones being sold that cheap are going to be the same as name-brand ones costing double or more.
And now that you mention the do-it-yourself method: Is that a good cost effective way to get a good exhaust? or is it cheaper to buy a pre-built?

I have an eBay brand catback. Affordable (less than $200) sadly, it's discontinued.

if anything the sound will be the difference. The y-pipe and cat is where you can pick up some performance. Someone in the for sale section here has a pretty nice whole system for a decent price.

Used is a great choice, that is if you can find one locally so you won't have to pay for shipping.

I had an eBay one for 4-5 years without issue aside from the look of the can. They're all the same basically. Recently sold it and it was still in decent shape.

Just make sure piping is at least 2.5"

i have a pacesetter catback and was told it was discontinued when i replaced it for the second time almost 2 years ago. if you can find a pacesetter, i think you'll really like the tone. took mine about 2 weeks to break in, then it sounded really nice.

That red paint so clean with that shiny exhaust, I was thinking of getting one but don't want an ugly fart can sound.. But a nice tone would be nice. They say the fart cans are the $25 eBay exhausts right? Lol, have to look around..

I have had a few well known Nissan shops recommend Vibrant mufflers, Vibrant 1046 to be exact. I have been told it has a great sound to it without being annoying to you or your passengers. Go pick up one of theirs and have a pipe Mandrel Bent at a local shop. Shouldn't cost you much more than about 200 dollars.

Was thinking about adding a warpspeed y-pipe, skipping the catback & just adding a muffler to the stock b-pipe. Wondering how it would sound, anyone wanna chime in to this?

It'll sound sort of bleh due to the unequal y-pipe.

the reason you want the cat back is for more free flowing air to add to the tone and moar race car sound!!

That's true. I just want anything too loud. Just to sound at WOT. So if I get the warp Y-pipe, I have to go cat back but if I don't get it, the muffler alone would be cool?

Catback

Saw that OP ran across Greddy exhausts. Do they still sale those or are they discontinued?

I found it by Google searching 95 Maxima cat-back, I believe it's used but I didn't research it due to lack of funds

Catback

Oh okay yea because i thought they were new that would have been awesome. But anyhow people have also recommended mandrelbentexhaustsystems. Com for a cheap alternative. U should check it out they have options such as tube piping size and u could either choose from aluminized steel or stainless steel. Prices werent too bad and fitment was said to be good.

Hey as a side question:

Would adding some obx headers to that setup make the car really loud? I've been hearing videos of Maxima with them and they sound amazing but I can't tell exactly how loud they are.

OBX Headers
I'm not familiar with the OBX Headers. Yes I've heard of the company but not sure about how they will actually sound on a Maxima, their quality, and exact fitment. I recommend contacting www.Racinglineperformance.com for exhaust parts.

i believe they need some modification to fit properly. better off getting a warpspeed y pipe. the gains are better.

Y-pipe gains are not better than our "longtube" headers but the complicated install might not be worth the couple of extra ponies.

I'll tell you one thing, they certainly don't sound better.
