Do I need a new harmonic balancer?
Do I need a new harmonic balancer?
Hello, I have a 1999 Nissan Maxima GXE. I noticed that the crankshaft pulley is wabbleing side to side slightly. Also I hear a slight rattling noise periodicly, and the belt screaces when I turn it on occasionally. I had a mechanic tell me about 3000 miles ago that the harmonic balancer was starting to go out, but I decided to not go with that mechanic because it sounded like he was trying to over sell me on a few things, and the next mechanic I went to told me it was fine. I also just went to a mechanic for a full fluid change and they did not say anything about it. But I'm still worried about it breaking down on my. I'm linking a video of what I am talking about, so if anyone can give me an idea that would be great

I remember when I had this Issue my car sounded like crap starting up made a horrible noise. the internal or guts was stripped but i have to say it happened quicker cause i had front valve cover leak. It's not a hard job but you DO NEED a Air Gun. My friend works at the Nissan dealership. Took the belt off 1 bolt and replace with new one think it cost between $54-$78 off ebay. Plus I don't Recommend long Distance trips till replaced.
I didn't listen to the audio but by the way it looks doesn't look that bad...mine's been wobbling around a tiny bit like that for a long time also. Anyone else know if this is a concern? I'm at 249k miles and the harmonic balancer was already replaced at 140k miles.
If you are seeing the harmonic balancer wobbling, it is going bad. But after watching the video, I don't really see any wobble. I'd suggest you check both the alternator belt and the power steering belt for wear and tightness.
