Got a P0734 code - how screwed am I?

Lately my 95 Maxima would stay in gear too long. It finally pulled a check engine code: P0734.

There isn't a problem with the transmission fluid level.

What's my next step?

Will I need to rebuild my transmission again? (400K miles on my third transmission)

The one only question here is how and what condition is the fluid in. Pink/red ect. The fluid smells or any metal shavings. The problem can be a actual valvebody or the shortage in the solenoids. The solenoids got to be your problem unless it's the gummed up valve body.

Here is the P0734 description from the FM.

This malfunction is detected when the A/T does not shift into fourth gear position or the torque converter clutch does not lock up as instructed by the TCM. This is not caused by electrical malfunction (circuits open or shorted) but by mechanical malfunction such as control valve sticking, improper solenoid valve operation, malfunctioning oil pump or torque converter clutch, etc.

Does not sound good.

Check the fluid that will tell you what is wrong with the car. The fluid has metal shavings or burnt smell the trans is toast. Is the tranny slipping or late shifting. This is mechanical otherwise.

The transmission is not slipping, but it is shifting late.

The fluid seems fine. I'm not sure what fluid the shop is using. I assume OEM.

As an update, I spent $1400 on another transmission (which is now transmission #4; 390K miles on car).
