Restore, or Redo?
Restore, or Redo?
My 98 Maxima is dark metallic green, "almost black" with beige interior. It's in pretty good shape with small dent on drivers door, and paint scrape and fade on the hood.
The interior is okay, with look's like oil stains on carpet, and drivers side and passanger side door panels and center arm rest are needing replacement.
Over all, interior in good shape.
I love the look of all black interior, but on the fence about it. We get pretty hot summers in Colorado, and I don't want to burn my legs against the hot leather. So, one reason I want to keep the beige cloth. Second, it would take a lot of effort to replace everything with black, but very little to replace the worn out beige parts.
I know black leather is a factory option, and I can "easily" find parts and swap them out. But is the look worth the burn?
I know I want the exterior painted all black, and I think either black or beige would look good with it. Other plans are, gold leaf mesh wheels, such as old classic BBS RS wheels from the 80's, mild body kit, etc'.
Suggestions, ideas, thoughts?

I also have the dark green exterior and the beige interior. It gets hot, but does not burn. Opening the windows before starting the ac helps a lot.
I have owned dark cars with dark interiors.
While I did not have leather, old dark vinyl interiors can burn quite well.
I used to live in Salt Lake City. Hot summers there.
I live in Por land now. Still gets hot in the summers, and I do drive to desert regions.

I'm going to stick with the beige and restore it. I've already found a couple of pieces at the salvage yard to replace the faded, scratched and worn black dash pieces, but they do not have that ritch black interior look I'd like. Thought about Armorall wipes but don't want greesy feeling and I've read that armorall is bad for plastics.
Any ideas on how to get the black, BLACK? I tried repainting them once and don't want to do that.
I was also about to replace the door panels with perfectly good ones at local salvage yard, but they had crushed the car when I went back the following week. Still, looking for center arm-rest.
Anyway, ideas on how to get the interior to look like new and get the black to look really good? Thanks!

Are your cloth seats and the rug kinda grimy and nasty?
I know of a cheap and effective way to clean them.
My method is best done during the hottest week of the year. Definitely not now.
I learned about Armour All the hard way. In my opinion and experience, it seems to cause cracking.
I have read about some products to restore the black look to exterior trim pieces.
While I don't reccomend this for interior items, I have used black shoe polish on exterior black rubber bumper trim. It looked good, and lasts quite a while.

Most of the interior is ok. Worst is the carpeting which looks like old oil stains. Both my cousins were mechanics so not surprised. There is some black rub on inside door handles, shifter, and such.
it's actually in descent shape for age and mileage.
I think just replace the two front door panels and a super steam clean detailing should do the trick.

I have had excellent results with deep cleaning the rugs and doors.
I pour a strong dose of liquid laundry detergent into a bucket of warm water. I also get a wet or dry shop vac ready, along with the garden hose and a spray attachment. Remove the filter from the shop vac.
Next, I remove the seats. Try to protect the power seat motor and the switch. I bag and tape with blue masking tape.
Spray the seats, get them wet. Then apply the soap solution with a large sponge. Let the soap do its thing for a few minutes. Scrub the fabric with a brush, or one of those plastic dish scrubbers which look like mesh.
Next step is to suck the soap solution from the seat.
Spray the seat with the garden hose again, no soap this time. Scrub a bit more. Suck up with shop vac.
Repete one more time.
The seat will dry in a day or two on a hot, low humidity day.
I clean the rug exactly the same way.
Yes, I did say to spray your rug with the garden hose and the soap solution.
I leave the windows rolled down a bit for a few days till the interior is nice and dry again.
The interior is probably made from polyester.
Laundry soap is very good at cleaning cotton-polyester. It will remove oil stains fairly well.

The front seats are held in by four bolts. They are easy to remove. So is the lower portionof the back seat. In fact, removing the seats fom the car is the easiest and best way to clean the seats and the carpet. Leaving them in and trying to clean them in the car will result in a half assed job of cleaning both the seats and the carpet. The seats get in the way. I have done this three times so far. I know what I'm talking about.
My seats are fabric, just like yours.
The beat time to do this is when humidity is low, and when it will be hot and sunny for several days.
