Actually the reason is because OEM Y-pipes are constructed with a double wall design. Think of a pipe inside a pipe. That cuts down on noise and resonance a lot over aftermarket Y-pipes that are all made out of only one pipe. Also it's louder at the tailpipes because it's made of larger diameter tubing (which seems to increase sound levels all by itself).

icicic..... i understand the noise now but do u think gutting the precats would do it's job to make my cat back system loud.... i mean i like the sound and all but to me it kinda sounds funny in certin rpm ranges i have auto 95' maybe the auto already explains the funny noises in certin rpm ranges oh well yeah just hit me up with a reply on this post later

hey, seriuosly, what about FLOWMASTER? I know its mostly on trucks and stuff, but I heard that they do sound good. Plus a friend can hook me up wiht one for like 50 bucks.

thats funny u say that, on my old max (93), i just went to shop, very stupid and uneducated, and said i wanted a louder exhaust and they put flowmaster muffler on there and i had a short ram intake, and it actually sounded really good, the closest thing to sounding like a V8 other than maybe the couple of guys ive seen on this forum with dual custom pipes, i got a lot of complements and even inspired another local max to do the same with his 3rd gen.
