I was low on gas, and the low fuel warning never came on! When I filled up, it took 17.7 gallons! The official fuel capacity is 18.5 gal, so I had less than a gallon left when I filled up!

On my two Maximas where the gas light does come on, it's when the needle is just a butt hair above the E white line. Way too late if you ask me!

The sensors are in the gas tank and it seems they give up the ghost after a while. Mine was proud and strong, but after years of too much ethanol, it succumbed to its bad habits. Turns out, mine wasn't alone.... It's epidemic.
If you are so inclined to replace the the sending unit with an OEM, you have access under the back seat.
With so many other annoying problems, I've never reached the bottom of my priority list to do it. Maybe some day! LOL

They work until they don't.
One day you might run out of gas because the little light won't light.
So watch your guage instead.
Duh.

Way back when, I bought a used 260z. I learned about a week later that the tank was empty when the gas gauge was a little below 1/2 full. It happened when I ran out of gas on the San Francisco Bay Bridge. Scary. 5 lanes of freeway traffic with no breakdown lane and a 175 foot drop to the water below.
I nearly ran out of gas in my 1997 Maxima when the gas gauge was near "E" and the light was just flickering on. I was going up a steep hill near my house. Suddenly the engine dropped power and started to chug. Fortunately I got the car around quickly and coasted (with the engine engaged and running) to a gas station at the bottom of the hill.
I now watch the gauge, the light, and the trip odometer and I never push it.
